They should call it the iPhone Nano then. Truth in naming.

Couple of big issues for me:
1) and this may be explained before launch ... no direct Exchange server integration. I don't want imap/pop3, and I don't want to have itunes running on a desktop so that it can pull info from a mapi client (Outlook). I need direct Exchange support.
2) No built in GPS, google maps will be close to useless without it, it'll just be a novelty.
3) 2G instead of 3G ... with that much internet capability not having 3G is a cardinal sin.
4) only 4gb or 8gb for video.
5) Forgot about FCC ... I need a new phone now and I'm probably not going to wait till June.
6) Price. What got me was that the named price *included* the 2yr contract. So unless they come up with some rebate deals that's the price of a ps3 for me. I don't mind spending $299 on a phone. I just can't do that much for the supposed phone + ipod marketing when it's only 4gb or 8gb.

I'm guessing apple will have stuck pretty close to the default bluetooth profile specs. I can't see why they'd stray away from them, unless they needed to for isync. And since isync is so picky about bluetooth specs, I'm guessing there's a good chance it'll work with the BMW bluetooth implementation without issues.
... you've got points on most of what you say, though I disagree with 3. Having google maps w/o GPS is anything but useless. It's a map of the world at your fingertips. While you might not have turn by turn navi, all you need to do is look out your window at the nearest street sign to find out where you are (and enter it in using the awesome keyboard). Then type in your destination, and read the directions that result.

This phone just replaced about 70% of the functionality of a navigation system. To me, that makes it worth its price.

iPhone is good, for non-business users

iPhone is basically a fancy ipod that can make phone calls - big deal. Can it access my company's exchange server when I travel so I don't have to startup my laptop? no. Can it access my outlook calendar when I'm in a meeting? No. It has google maps, great. But can it tell me where I am when I get lost? No. Can I use it to watch my slingbox while I'm waiting in the shopping mall for a friend? No. Can I use it all day, go out at night, come home, forget to charge it and it'll still work in the morning? No.

Sorry, but I'll pass.

I love it, and can't wait for it to come here. The two things I didn't like have been picked up - Not HSDPA (the 3G standard used here by our biggest carrier - Telstra), and such a small amount of storage for something that is going to play video!

Like all Apple stuff, this will all be improved upon in a short space of time, like the Intel Macs.

I was a little shocked yesterday when Apple announced the phone as the "iPhone" especially since Linksys already has a product called the iPhone and has had the term iPhone patented for that last 10 years. : http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper

Well the Apple phone does not even have FCC approval yet and won't be out until June or so, so we will see what happens. It does look pretty nice though.

The other thing is that it is exclusive to AT&T/Cingular so all other carriers are SOL.

to all you Exchange people: this an Apple product. if you crave M$ products like exchange + outlook so much, then you should clearly stay away from iPhone and keep your BBs and smartphones trying to convince yourselves that it's just as good, if not better, than the iPhone. just like you can keep convincing yourselves Windows is just as good, if not better, than OS X.

also, from iPhone's rich multimedia package, Yahoo agreement, Google integration and Cingular partnership, it is very clear to me that this product is NOT indented for enterprise-level users. rather, it's for regular people who love technology, gadgets, tight product integration, strong software package and want more from their (smart)phone than what it's currently out there.

i'm pretty sure that in time, or even by its release date in June, they will come up with some kind of exchange link that will sync up your mail but you can forget about the most ridiculous product (after IE) that M$ ever came up with -- Outlook (especially portable version of it). that's simply never gonna happen.

I dont think Steve Jobs actually thinks the iPhone is a smartphone by the way "smartphone" applies to mobile products today. I think he is trying to present that if your going to call something a "smartphone" the iPhone would be the #1 candidate for such a title...the BB/Treo mobiles should be called something else, but definately not "smartphones".

Exactly, I think the downfall of the iphone is going to be that the touchscreen qwerty keyboard will suck. It will be a trendy cool thing to have I'm sure, but business device I doubt it. I see that RIMM is back up a bit today as people realize that dumping RIMM shares was a bit of a knee jerk reaction.

Errr .... no.

I'm the tech ops manager for a software company; I'm around Exchange and Windows all day long. But when I go home, it's OS X all the way. In my opinion it's a much better os than Windows.

Problem is, Apple has no enterprise messaging system. 99% of the companies out here in Microtoon town (we're 3 miles from MS main campus) run Exchange. That means if I want corp email/contacts/scheduling when I travel, or away from a computer, I *HAVE* to have something that can hit Exchange.

It's not that I think it's a better product. Or that my smartphone/windows is better. I'd love to have an iphone, I've been preaching that there should be convergence for years. I mean, why have a monster desktop computer just to surf the web and read email when I've got a phone in my hand that's got more processing power than the 386 I used in college?

But without being able to connect to exchange for business, the iphone is nothing more than a toy. It's not the convergence item it's being pitched as since it's isolating 90% of the business users.

I think for Apple to initially go after those users you speak of would be quite a reach, getting the younger, less buisiness crowd first, and then as they grow, develop the iPhone to suit buisiness needs.

iPhone is nice, but it sucks that Cisco has already filed a law suit against Apple for infringment rights of their patented name iPhone back in 96..

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but on the keynote, didn't Jobs say it is IMAP and POP3 compliant - you should be able to hook that up with exchange. In fact he did explicitly remark at one point about how this would kill the Blackberry.

I know IMAP/POP3 isn't all that exchange does, but it is email. And the iPhone will most definitely be able to sync with windows - all Apple's new stuff comes out with that [MAC + PC] logo now - makes sense as Apple are positioning themselves as a consumer electronics company now. I think iTunes on the PC taught them a good lesson when they saw the iPod suddenly gain even more traction, then an echo affect down the track when the PC iPodders suddenly started buying Macs.

Surely the ecosystem around the iPod is a significant part of why all new Mac sales are to first timers now - as mentioned in the Keynote. The Apple TV and iPhone will only strengthen this.

I think a commercial settlement was reached - Steve mentioned the matter during his presentation. He said something about the name costing him a lot of money to get from them.

that's why i said i don't believe this product is meant for enterprise-level users.

however, i really think the iPhone will have the ability to sync with exchange server no problem. since Apple Mail already supports the NTLM 2, i don't see why it wouldn't also be included in the portable Apple Mail. i know you won't get all the perks of outlook when synced with exchange but for basic stuff you need while you're away, i think it will be sufficient enough.

I think at the end of the day everybody wins from this. Nokia won't take this laying down.

Interesting is that there are 200 patents in this new phone, someone is going to have to pay Apple serious licensing fees - if it is available for license.

They say Apple's legal department sometimes make more money than Apple.

OOPS! Just saw that Cisco is claiming skulduggery - with Apple registering a front company to make the application for the name after Cisco refused Apple's advances. Looks like an interesting fight will shape up here, with words exchanged, and now looking like Cisco won't back down. Very dumb of Steve to carry on like it is OK and only enrage Cisco more...

Apple think they can defend it with the "family of products" argument, but commentators are saying this is shaky with Cisco and subsidiaries already releasing products under that name.

Just like with iTV, Apple Phone anyone??
