Cheapest insurance co. with a teenager away for college?
Well, my daughter won't touch my cars, and the family one a few weeks a year at best (away for college with no car), but most insurance companies include driving age teenagers as drivers of ALL cars.
The cheapest company, AIG (or 21st Insurance, after their fiasco) became the most expensive, so had to switch, but didn't have time to shop around, so went with Geico. By the way, Geico said they don't charge extra for teenagers away for college, but their prices surely include them. At least they were a good $400 less than AIG, but AIG was $400 below Geico before that inclusion. LESSON: Insurance companies can be the best in one set of circumstances, but the worst in others, so it pays to compare rates often. If anybody here is in a similar situation, would appreciate your info to start shopping around that renewal is around the corner. Thx. |

It really is going to depend on more items than what you can post here. I'm an insurance agent though, and my recommendations (realize things vary per state also) is if your family has a good driving record and your daughter has good grades, State Farm. If not, Progressive or (gagh!) Geico for the cheapest of the cheap, barebones policy not designed well enough to do much in an accident.

By the way, have the house with State Farm and they were quite higher than Geico, even with the house discount. They were the only ones I tried. AIG/Century21 is out, as Geico was lower. What other reputable companies are left? Progressive and Allstate (always highest, so might not waste my time again)? Anybody else? I'm in TX, by the way. Thanks man. |

Progressive, Geico, & Farmers are some of the lowest rated companies, fyi.
If State Farm is out (in my mind worth paying a little extra for), then try Liberty Mutual or Country. USAA is good if you qualify (current or ex armed forces).

I will be in the same situation soon. Would you care to share your actual premiums?
And let us know how you get on with the other companies.

Now that I have a few more days to shop around, will call the others recommended. The sad story is my daughter only drove a handful of times during those 6 months. Oh well. Hope this helps buddy. |
