Oh, and i would rather have a freshly printed book in my hands rather than pay the same (or more if you buy the book on amazon) for a bunch of bytes.

My gf bought me a 3G yesterday, in part because I'm so derisory of Apple products. So far it has its pluses and minuses, like anything else, but one benefit I do like it the e-reader function. i read a LOT and usually on a trip I'm hauling two or three books and a few magazines; very handy to have those in digital format. THat said, Apple's selection of books sucks. It looks like I'll need the Kindle app to get a lot of my Favorite authors. (No idea what's up with that capital F...)

It will be a while before you can just walk in and buy one. For hers, she pre-ordered and got it the day of release. For mine, she made a reservation last Saturday and it came in on Thursday. I haven't heard of a backlog of more than a week, though people are predicting that when it goes on sale overseas, especially amid rumors there's a shortage of the displays they use.

^Just as a follow-up, Apple has extended the wait times on their web site from 5-7 days to 7-10 days...

Amen dude.

But he had already pretty much said he was in the marketing side, so I don't think he was really speaking from an IT techie perspective, which is ok too.

This will be a success for Apple. Period. There's no doubt about that. But there's no changing of the landscape of technological devices here. It's a neat little gadget creating its own niche. Kinda like the X6, but more sensible.

I wonder when Apple is going to bridge the gap between the iPhone and the iPad. Just think of the possibilities.

Ala X1, X3, X5, X6?

Here's the ingenius bit - they've turned their functional limits into assets, by turning these devices into appliances rather than pcs. The reason most people have a toaster or microwave or George Foreman grill is you don't always need the heavy equipment for a simple snack.

Same with the iPad - you don't always need the full magilla of a pc when you're traveling, so this gives you some of the key functions without needing to haul a laptop around. In trade, you get longer battery life and lighter weight, same as your toaster is smaller and uses less power.

See it for what it is - a great toaster, 4 slices, does bagels and thick breads, numerous settings, looks great on your counter - and you'll appreciate it. Try to use it as an oven, and you're asking for frustration.

They're making far greater in-roads with these devices than they ever have in the pc market (where they're 6%).

When the iPad first came out, I thought it was a big waste of money...and most important...could not figure out where it could fit in my life...technologically speaking.

Anyways, I took the plunge a few days ago and frigging love this thing. I'll always need my MacBookPro...because sometimes you just need a real computer...but this is a nice break. It does things that you don't need a laptop for, and stuff the iPhone doesn't do...because it's just not comfortable surfing and stuff on an iPhone(or any PDA) for a long period of time.

Excuses, maybe. Happy? Yes.
