Porsche Rebuild
My dad is constantly telling me to look for an old Porsche 911 to rebuild, modify and have as a project car.
He wants to get an old one, possibly a junker, doesn't matter if it doesn't run since we're going to get an engine for it. The thing is, i have no idea where to start looking. Questions that i have are generally: Where should look? Should i look for something specific? Where could i get parts? Is there a forum that specializes in this? Does anybody have any experience in this area that could help me? Thanks in advance.

Craig's list is a good place to look for a project. Hope dad has deep pockets as it will be an expensive project. Do some research and determine the year range you want to work with. Personally I would stay away from Targa's and Cab's.

p.s., also join the PCA. Your area is the Gold Coast Region Zone 12.
http://www.goldcoastregion.org/ fwiw, a 1978-1983 911SC would be the best return for your money. But if you find a good body don't forget that any air cooled engine can fit in any 1965-1997 Porsche 911 body. So that means you have 911, 964, and 993 to choose from. |

The modern Targa has a pano glass roof/open sunroof. The early ones had a removable roof section.
The problem with the early Targa is that over time the chassis gets torqued out. Without the roof support (as in a coupe), you ended up with a twisted chassis. The Targas didn't have enough frame reinforcement. Not all Targas will necessarily have a bad chassis but it's very hard to find one with low enough mileage where it's not an issue (and then you're into big money concours type specimens.) |

Cabrios are not a concern for you - Porsche didn't make a 911 convertible until 1983. Everyone's so dependent on the internet these days - a decent book on Porsches will have you drowning in quality information. If you can find it, I'd suggest "Original Porsche 911" by Peter Morgan.
I recommend www.samba.com for a Porsche shell, as more project Porsches seem to pop up there than anywhere. Be aware that rustproofing was non-existent until 1974, and only a suggestion until 1978 - debut of the 911SC, the first fully galvanized 911. |

I'm pretty sure epbrown meant thesamba.com and not samba.com.
Mostly a VW centric site, put still plenty of Porsche and Porsche parts in their classified section. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/cat.php?id=59 |
