my friend's dad used to use tobasco sauce. not sure in the eyes, nose or mouth. Guessing the latter two, probably nose. that would keep me awake. sounds super uncomfortable.

Dont do it. But if you must then crank down the window so you get a constant breeze and fresh air on your face, listen to upbeat music, and drink lots of fluids.

This does not work, btw. I did all of those just before crashing.

Definitely very dangerous to drive without rest. But if you reall have to, this is what I do to prevent from going into that half as sleep mode.

Candy bar. Sugar will keep you up.
redbull. For obvious reason
Cigarette. Not because of the smoke, but it keeps your mind alert because you have to worry about the lid cig in the car.
keep a topic in your head and do some brainstorming. This could be anything. A business idea or something, just keep your mind busy.

If you fall into a half as sleep mode, its too late. Nothing will help except if you pull over and get out of the car.

Try to take a nap because it's unlikely you need to go anywhere unless it's exigent.

I drove while tired only once (last time I will do that) -- I hallucinated and went into some day dream mode, then a few seconds later I saw a huge flock of black birds fly past my window. I 'woke up' and realized that nothing was there and I was veering (luckily there was little traffic on the highway). I took that as a sign and pulled over, took a nap, then drove back home.
