If only. I may be going there on the Thursday for the M3 Touring and GT4RS. G87 would be the icing on the cake but I highly doubt it.

Exactly! The trademark M baboon butt looks horrible. Not sure why they insist on cheapening the look of the flagship models. Looks like cost cutting you would find on a 18K car.

That colour sucks.

The good:
I actually like the overall design of the rear.
It's a beefy looking thing again, looks real squatted and mean.
The exhaust tips look awesome.

Can't wait to see the rest, this really is make or break for BMW. I think the car world has had about enough of their weird shit now, if they fuck this one up then I reckon they will start losing a bit of credit amongst the petrol heads.
I'm confused. Your last comment says BMW will lose credit with petrolheads if they screw this up, but your entire post just talks about aesthetics.
So which is it? Are they losing credit with petrolheads or with art critics?
Would you like definitions of what a petrolhead is vs an art critic?

Not one word about how it will drive, but yeah, you are definitely a petrolhead! Did I mistakenly end up in ArtCriticPost.com?

All the whining about it being ugly. I'm sure it will drive great, just like the G8X drives wonderfully. I'm perfectly happy if all the art critics go buy another brand.

Save for special models like a CS or CSL, you can almost guarantee the interior (save for some materials like merino v dakota leather, CF trim and seat design), headlights and taillights will be shared among the series cars and M models.

It doesn't make financial sense to make bespoke headlights, taillights or change the interior layout for your normal M and M comp cars. You might get changes to internal graphics of the lights, but they won't go through the trouble of changing the headlight or taillight shape that would also require new bumpers and hood/trunk components.

The tranny is a different version, with different gearing. Remember the DCT was used in several non M models as well, like the 135is, etc.

Diff is different, engine is different, lit up M seats only came out in one general so far...

So much whining and complaining. The G8X M2 will drive great, have a manual, RWD and LSD and will be well priced. We should be thanking our lucky stars

The only thing I'm seeing is whining about how the car looks. Not one comment about how it drives.

100% comments about how it looks --> art critic

The concepts of looks and drives are not mutually exclusive, but I'm only hearing one of those two.

Gotta agree with you here. Coming from two E82's the F22 was a huge letdown for me, both design wise and handling wise.

The F87 was a handsome design and unequivocally improved on the handling aspects.

But I would like the G87 to have some attitude and snarkiness about it like the 1 M. This is the entry level M, so the design should have some edginess to it and so I'm okay with the designers taking some risks with it, whether hit or miss in the eyes of the beholder.

I liked what I saw with the G42 enough to order one. Not expecting it to do what the 1 M or G87 is capable of, but to be balance and complement the stable.

If this thing has blistered fenders like the 1 M and is half as edgy to drive I'll be over the moon.

I only hope they continue to work out the dead center numbness out of the EPS that its lacked since inception.

I agree with your sentiment about this car. Let's hope it doesn't disappoint, but the ingredients are there.

However, I don't think there is much debate that the dilution of M has intensified in recent times. The M mirrors and M grille badge on a new X3 M40i had me do a double take yesterday.

I read this from topspeed, I was unaware until now:

"The current BMW M2 Competition has a weight distribution of 53:47, which means 53-percent of its weight is ahead of the center point while 47-percent is behind. In an effort to improve handling, BMW has managed to improve the weight distribution to a perfect 50:50, which should help account for better handling. This is also the same weight distribution in the M240i."

I'm thinking this is one of those cars that would look pretty good as a whole but not great when focusing on it's individual parts.

That's what I want to believe, anyway.

This. Show me a new car that isn't ugyl or weird looking. That's just poor timing for what will be the last generation of full ICE cars. I hate the tails, the dash, the long hood, the small back seats but 6MT/RWD is a rare combo.

I think it is just a really bad angle.

TBH, I've never liked BMW pics. (E9x, M2, F8x, G8x) and now this Gen M2.

But on another note...WE ARE ALMOST THERE

The top of the rear is very round and bubbly especially in person, then they decided to square out the bottom. They did the same on the front. Very round, with tiny headlights. Then added random angular triangles.
There will be fans that will really like the car; and it will have some traits where it will obviously outshine past versions. When I look at it though, everything is discombobulated. It lacks a flow. You almost have to compartmentalize the car when you look at it. Also, if the M240i dimensions carryover, the elongated hood that comes at the expense of a usable backseat is interesting. They should have made it a true two seater and been done with it. Of course I am incredibly biased - but love all the flowing curves of my Comp that are mixed with a few simple lines. Maybe the LCI or Comp version of the G87 can change my tune, but I think I am going to ride it out with the F87. I'll be happy for those that think otherwise.
Not sure I agree, as much as I love the f87, its side profile looks terrible when compared to the new g87. Awkward dimensions.
To me the F87 looks better even from that angle. I actually really like the side profile of F87 so maybe I was predisposed to disagree haha
Agreed ‼️
Difficult to say until we have official photos of the new m2, but if the comparison of m240s is anything to go by, there is no doubt the new body is objectively better.
My mans doesn't know the what objective means lol

I had the DCT in my E89 Z4, although I will say it was nothing like the DCT in M cars. The shifter acted like a standard BMW shifter, and the programming on the non-M cars was laggy as hell in the standard settings.

We've seen the G42 in person and pictures.
We've seen the G87 bumper leaks.
We've seen the G87 camo pictures
We've seen the G87 camo videos.

The leak looks exactly like we should have expected.

I agree 100% the M brand is being diluted for the reasons you stated above. I forget the exact percentages, but the % of bespoke parts, unique to the M version of that model (in the M3/4 at least), has shrunk from generation to generation.

However, not once, to my knowledge, has a standard M car (not counting special editions like M4 GTS, CSL etc.) received bespoke headlights, taillights or interior layout. Some people seem shocked to see that the taillights haven't changed, or hopeful that it won't get ID8 with the same interior layout. The biggest change I've seen so far has been grills with the G80/2 getting a front end design not shared with any other model and the G87 getting the same treatment with its grills. However, we know the G80/2 get the normal 4 series headlights and the G87 still gets the normal 2 series headlights.
