He left some material untrimmed since he said it makes it easier to take it off if redo is necessary. All the pieces that are currently hanging off should get trimmed. But this thing better be perfect after he's done with it the next time around. He could still potentially get 4 stars from me, but he's going to have to work for it.

10 days until I potentially get my car back from PPF after having been there for 7 days already.

Absolute torture but if the tints and PPF are done 10/10 I'll be happy and on my way. I need to schedule some track days ASAP

Mine is going on 14 days today. Hopefully I can pick it up today. I'll post pics when I get it.

Just reading all of this.
1. I’m sorry this happened to your car. This is terrible news and I’d be livid beyond belief and not paying for that service. I’ve never heard of a tail light outage due to PPF.

2. I spent weeks visiting and talking to the PPF shops before I found the one I was comfortable with. He walked me through the whole car and has done numerous G87’s before. We live and we learn, not your fault at all.

3. There should be NO pealing and NO reason to come back. It should be not only flush with the car but also preferably rolled into and under the panels. I think he is giving excuse for the leaving excess and redo. I’ve never heard of that and this isn’t normal at all and I hope you didn’t pay for services. In all honesty with the light and lack of promised services, I’d seek legal council on this (just my advice).

No excuse for this shops work. I’ve never heard of a catastrophe like this, nor should they have to take the door panels off for tint or attempt to do it themselves. Especially without asking for permission first.

Did you walk through and ask which pieces would be taken off and which wouldn’t? Hopefully they did not take off the antanae on top, that’s a big no no with the G87’s due to leakage.

1. I'm quite upset but am going to try to keep myself from going ballistic until I see what he can do at the next appointment. His failure to cover the taillight connector shows negligence and thankfully he sent me a pic where you can see the uncovered connector surrounded by water, so I have some ammunition.

2. I called around and talked to a few places, but I know now I should have go met with these shops to do more due diligence.

3. I did pay him, less a few hundred for my inconvenience and now regret that decision. I felt that coming back in a couple weeks to get rid of any bubbles was reasonable, but I did not expect the edges to start coming up like that. It rained this weekend and a ton of grime seems to gave gotten under some of the edges after he assured me the car was ok to drive in the rain. If I'm unsatisfied with the finished product I will give him the opportunity to refund me part or all of the cost before I start threatening legal action.

The door panel removal was insane and I might have a rattle in the door now, so I need to ask him if he removed one or both. I didn't ask specifically which parts were removed, but I will.

I'll keep you posted on how this all pans out, but I'm definitely pretty unhappy with the service thus far.

Keep us updated! Once again, sorry for your experience. It tends to ruin the fun of this beautiful piece of machinery you bought in the short term. I am sure it will all settle itself out in the end.

Did you pay with a credit card?

If he's not willing to refund you 100%, I'd be getting ready to do a chargeback.

Definitely a bummer, but it will indeed work itself out in the long run.

I paid cash, unfortunately, to avoid the 4% fee he passes onto the customer.

I was highly skeptical when I first got it installed on my 2017 M2, so I only got a track package which is hood, bumper, fenders, a-pillars.

In 2023 my only regret is that I didn't PPF the entire car.
I second that ❕

Peeling is a terrible sign to come. He probably didn't seal the edge with a heat gun. I do ppf as a hobby and the edge is a big problem because they are lazy and not seal it. I learned this the hard way .
Once dust gets to the edge and lift/peel, all you can do is trim it. This is where cutting into the paint can occur.

I wish you the best of luck.

Yep, it's not looking great. I didn't have a ton of reason to be concerned when I picked it up since the there were just a few bubbles and the edges seemed ok other than the few little tags sticking out. After seeing how much dirt is under some of the edges now I've grown concerned. Something tells me he might be redoing a couple panels, and if it comes down to that, I might just ask for a refund so I can have another shop finish the job.

Yeah I'd definitely be starting the conversation to just get your money back. He has dropped the ball with pretty much every opportunity he's had and I wouldn't have any confidence in him doing anything right. Each time he touches your car you're taking a risk that he's gonna screw something up.

Sorry again man, I'm sure this will all get sorted out one way or another.

The dealer said they’re going to need to keep the car overnight to get the wiring harness out of the bumper, so I’m picking the car up now so I can at least drive around with one taillight for the weekend.
Rattle? You don’t happen to have a garage door opener in there, do ya? Mine drove me NUTS for a week looking for the rattle. Threw it out the window and now all is fine.

This is making me nervous. I've got 2 shops that I'm considering.

$6,100 at one shop with an installer/owner who has about 4 years experience (no idea the experience level of the staff frankly). One of the staff put PPF on his arm in an Instagram video and cut the film with the razor to demonstrate they don't cut paint. That was a pretty extraordinary demonstration.

$6,700 at another shop that has been in the business for over 20 years apparently, but he's the owner and his son (and others) do the actual work. In fact, I'm not certain he doesn't farm out any 'paint correction' to a paint shop down the street. Both shops do much more expensive vehicles than mine.

One of these guys clued me in to the use of 'Probond' during installation being what I gather to be somewhat of a no-no amongst more experienced installers possibly. It's an 'adhesive promoter' that some shops use for various scenarios like wrapped edges, etc. From what I gather it makes removal of the PPF much more difficult and potentially could cause damage to the paint finish.

It was a sort of nasty thing for one of the shops to tell off on another of the shops, but from what he says that's something one of the shops does that performs bulk installs and cuts everything by hand to help hold the film in place while cutting it. Just FYI.

He also confessed that there is a lot of shady business practice in this industry. I was glad to hear him confess to it. My confidence level is pretty low that I'm getting everything I'm paying for; 'paint correction' for example. I don't think they actually do anything because they claim you can't tell after the film is applied. Which doesn't inspire confidence that it's going to look as nice as the paint underneath.

Haha, I did see your post about the garage door opener. Mine is definitely inside the door panel, likely caused by him removing it. I can recreate the sound by banging on the door panel with my hand.

Thanks for the support. I'm discussing it with him now and will expand the conversation on refund based on how the taillight repair goes.

You're right though, he has lost my trust and I don't feel great about having him do anything further.

Oh Man, I had a much easier fix. Just took me way too long to figure it out. Good luck! I guess the dealer will be tearing into it.

I just realized last night that the BMW app tracks all kind of stuff related to the car. I'm anxiously checking it every other hour now lol. Looks like the hood, trunk, doors and all windows are open so it sounds like she's getting worked on. Bonus points for it tracking GPS so I can be comfortable they're not taking it on any joy rides.

They said it should be ready a week from tomorrow so we're getting closer but god damn it is TORTURE. I've driven the car about 60 miles since I've owned it

Thanks. I ordered it from Stardale Designs, so it isn't the official M Performance one.

Only issue I have with it is the installer said as soon as they started bolting it down, the inserts in the bottom of the wing started spinning. He said it's kind of common with these thin carbon parts and that I shouldn't worry about it coming off. But if I ever try to remove it, it may be a hard to get the bolts out.

I was thinking of going with their lip as it is $1,200 and they gave me a Black Friday code.
