A good trade in becomes one from the day you take possession of the vehicle. Good treatment. Good (and documented) service. No mods.

What I have done is get some offers for my trade in to get some idea of its value.

I have used KBB (dot com). But there might be other web sites too. And you can shop for a used car similar to your car to see what the used car market is like. The prices you see online will be retail and you can't expect to get that as a trade in but you can get an idea of what your trade in might go for retail and adjust your trade in price to reflect that.

Don't know about law/rules where you live but here in AR I have 60 days from the time I sell a used vehicle to use its sales price to reduce my sales tax on the new vehicle. For an ordered car though unless you are sure the car will arrive in time best to wait and trade it.

I got a pretty good offer (from a Ford dealer located just inside the MO state line) for my 2022 BMW 230i but I was not sure when the M2 would arrive at the dealer and even then I was not sure I would actually be able to buy the M2. I was worried the dealer might be stringing me along. Since the value of the 230i was good (low miles, excellent condition) I was loathe to risk losing that if I sold the car and then was unable to buy the new M2 in time.

In CA we don't get that trade-in tax incentive.

So to mitigate risk of getting low-balled before my 2017 showed up I sold the car to CarMax. I sold it the same day I picked up the M2 and endorsed the check to the dealer.

I know that's not an option for you, but at least you can get a quote from them. That might help you know where you stand.

CarMax doesn't negotiate, so I think they're a decent indicator of the market. Of course, a dealership can play with numbers so they may be able to give you more than a car is actually worth to "sweeten the deal."

I will probably do a similar thing this time around with the 2024 M2. I will get a quote and hope the dealer meets or exceeds it at purchase time. If they don't I will go back to CarMax and sell it there.

tl;dr

1 - Get a sense of market value in your area by getting quotes from dealers / CarMax for a cash purchase.
2 - Always be willing to walk away if you think you're being offered a bad deal. In my experience, if it's truly a bad deal the dealer won't let you walk away. If you're just trying to squeeze the last $500-$1k of value out of it, they might.

I don't know if it's a sign of the times, or uniquely a BMW issue, but this has been the worse new-car purchase experience in the 30 years I've been buying cars.

I was surprised that this car is a 09/23 build and upon looking at the paperwork it had just hit port at Galveston. I've never seen cars move that fast from factory to port to dealer.
I bought my M2 CS from that dealer at MSRP and had it shipped to LA. Was very easy via email.

I did something similar, sold my E82 to Carvana a few days after g87 delivery. They had the highest offer from multiple dealers in the area, including CarMax. Considered private sale but too much hassle, at least for me. Super simple and fast process. As a matter of fact, it took longer for the driver to take the liscence plates than the entire purchasing appointment.

Some things never change. Gavin Nuisance® is always bragging that the state has a massive budget surplus. So why are they doing this? Write to him and demand the policy be updated. Better yet vote his smarmy ass out of office.

What about license tag fees? When I was still living there, you got NO credit at all when you sold a car. For example, renew your tabs, sell the car 3 months later, sorry pal! You paid a full year but you bailed early. Gavin keeps your money. Did that ever get fixed so that you get a pro-rated refund?

I think I may have seen someone else provide a reference already, but I’ve had a really good experience with Faulkner BMW in Lancaster, PA. I worked with Tanner H. on two seperate purchases, and he was phenomenal. Seemed like a good dealer in general. Worth the ~4 hour drive from my local area both times!

I walked into BMW Vegas and picked up a new manual ZB M2 at MSRP same day without any other requirements. Didn’t get what I probably should on a trade, but that manual M2 happened to be unloading off the truck that day and I’m happy with my purchase

If you’re in Victoria, Australia, head to Valley Prestige and speak to Cameron.

Purchased my R1250RT Sport and just ordered 2025 G87 M2.

Doesn’t mess you around, will give you a price that doesn’t waste your time and will likely win the business first go. Thats what I’ve experienced on both occasions. Thought he had left the top box of my bike when he came back with a price.

It’s a bit of a drive out of metro but I think well worth it.

Cannot recommend highly enough.

I'm in NJ. I went to BMW of Bridgewater, but they did not treat me well. I'm pretty young and I have a great job in tech so I could def afford the car but my CA did not think I was serious even after I put down a deposit for a 2025. my CA did not keep me in the loop at all and I pretty much had to email/call them every time. Even when the order guide came out they didn't send it until I asked them twice. I also inquired about a discount/rebate that I qualified for and they kept dodging the question. Finally I told them to give me a refund on my deposit because of how I was treated. They wouldn't even let me test drive an m240i on the lot. BMW of Bridgewater finally gave it back to me after I gave specific examples of how my experience was not very good.

I ended up going to Circle BMW. I called on friday and they didn't have a deposit. My CA ended up getting one from a different store and had it the next day. I showed up and gave them a deposit for an M2. My CA answered all of my questions very well and I got to test drive an M240i and sat in a G82 to look at the interior and play with iDrive 8. He's been updating me every step of the way.

Definitely avoid BMW of Bridgewater if you're a younger guy. Maybe they're just ageist or something.

If it makes you feel any better, things will go the other way when you get older. Of course, they should have figured things out when you gave them a deposit. I guess some people don't like money. Perhaps take it there for service so the sales reprehensive can see the sale that he missed out on.

It's good to have options. Take advantage of them when you do. On the other hand, there are sometimes circumstances when you don't and you might just have to suffer through the crap just to get what you want. I bought my first sports car back in late 1993. This was back when the manufacturers were making really nice sports cars (think Supra, MR2, RX7, NSX, 300ZX) but the public just wasn't buying them in large enough numbers. It got to a point where dealerships wouldn't take these cars for fear of getting stuck with them on the lot for too long. Well, there was a local dealership that had what looked to be a boatload of 1994 Nissan 240SX convertibles on the lot. They also had three new 1993 240SX's with 4-wheel steering that had been repossessed from another dealership. They had been sitting for a while, so I made them an offer ($13k) that was way under the invoice price. The sales representative was ok, but the sales manager tried every trick in the book on me to get me to pay more. The thing was that I was pretty hardheaded and couldn't afford more anyway, so I didn't budge a bit. The sales manager even cussed and talked about how he's got to feed his family, blah, blah, blah. In the end, he was pissed but signed off on the deal. I actually got great enjoyment out of knowing that the jerk was so upset. I enjoyed the car too.

this was my experience at another tri-state BMW dealer as well (not Bridgewater). could not get the time of day as i waved a check in their face. BMW ridgefield in CT handled it with zero problems and had an immediate allocation for me. definitely is an element of ageism here but my sales guy tells me he cleans up just by taking young M car buyers that other people have left for dead. dunno why no one has figured it out yet

Don't listen to that penske BS - I have a couple M cars and a couple RS cars. Penske I know very well. They will ask for a mark up if they want to. There is no rule in their management that says they do not do mark up.

Had an interesting experience with a NorCal dealership. Put in an order for a 230i with $1k deposit and was assured they had an allocation (they didn’t I found out later). After 3 weeks of no production date, I went to another dealer and got the order, allocation and build date in one day. At the first dealer I was eyeing a 2024 M2, but had a $10 k adm and was apparently sold to a customer who ordered it. I spoke briefly with my SA about it and I was only mildly interested in it at the time. I then cancelled my order for the 230i with the first dealer. SA called a few days later, said the M2 sale fell through and would I be interested. I managed to get the M2 at MSRP with no haggles.

I had a great experience with Crevier. I got $1200 off of MSRP for my custom order and I also got an additional $500.00 off due to be being a Veteran. It was hassle free and painless. Highly recommend them.

I'm confused. You went back to the first dealership that lied to you about having an allocation and bought the M2 thereby leaving the second one that came through for you out?

Great experience with BMW of West St. Louis. Sales guy was great to work with, tried his best to get the color combo I wanted. When that didn’t work out I got a few thousand off a lot car which was nice. Good service dept with some badass loaners.

Yeah. I got a bit pissed at myself, but I had a choice of a 230i or M2. Which would you choose? M2s are difficult to find in my area.
