You're absolutely right. Max crashing into that pit lane entrance (car going left) could have been a disaster.
I guess both Lance and Max can be very happy with the outcome of their 300 kmh punctures.

There was of course that controversial F1 race that Michelin advised their users to either lower speed or reduce life to a few laps, and where Bridgestone had none of those problems (this was about 15 years ago, and then there were more than 1 tyremanufacturer active in F1).
As a result the race was held with only teams that used bridgestone.

If memory serves me correctly it was after a heavy crash with Ralph Schumacher.

This event can of course be explained in 2 ways:
1. Michelin makes unsafer tyres than bridgestone. (back then)
2. Michelin doesnt want to take any chance and after an (unexplained) incident they tell the teams not to take the risk.

But the FIA also plays a big role in how the tyres should be designed and what it's goals are.
Do they want to see more show or do they want to see more safety. These don't always go hand in hand.
