We've largely rendered the red light cameras illegal here. We had them years ago, but cities were messing with the algorithms to generate revenue from violations. It was such a scam.

As to your second question, the camera can't prove who was behind the wheel, so I believe they used to be treated more along the lines of a parking violation (...e.g. attached to the car, but not the driver). I don't recall people receiving points on their licenses over the violations. Maybe mahalom3 can chime in on that one.

Here in NS if you have ANY unpaid fines you can't renew your vehicle registration or drivers license. This includes unpaid parking tickets and any criminal fines you may have received. You can buy a new vehicle but you can't register it until ALL your fines are paid in full.

My take on the red light cameras as you have mentioned is another way the city or cities to make money. Yes, I believe it is a scam. One reason the city that I reside in got rid of them is because the cost and up keep to have red light cameras were too expensive. I don't think you get points either.

Yes!! I live just off Magazine but closer to the park, by Whole Foods. Despite everything we love about NOLA, it is a $hit show, a third-world country.

And no points, does not get reported to insurance, just a money grab by the city. If they really wanted to improve the safety (which is what they claim the cameras are for) they could simply increase the timing between when one direction turns red and the other gets the green. That has shown to be more effective at reducing accidents.

In NYC, we have both red light cameras and now school zone speed cameras. They recently changed the rules on where the cameras could be placed, which of course allowed more cameras. Also, it used to be the cameras were only operational when school was in session. Now they are on Monday - Friday from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm all year long. Ironically, when ALL schools were closed during lock down, the cameras were operational. And when all non essential businesses were on lock down, the city was busy at work installing new cameras. I guess that contractor was deemed essential

On a main road close to my house, the speed limit in one direction is 40 mph. In the opposite direction it drops to 30 mph on the same stretch of roadway. There is a speed camera within feet of the reduced speed sign.

It's a riot to see the things people do to obstruct their plates.

It becomes particularly expensive when you have an individual(s) who is willing to go for a little stroll in the wee hours of the morning past the speed cameras with a baseball bat and do a little tweaking of their positioning and shape.

Here in California, school zone speed enforcement is only in play if the school is in session and/or the law enforcement official can articulate there was activity at the school. Absent one of those two criteria, it's just a speeding ticket rather than a school zone enhanced ticket.

In NY state, I believe that the photo enforcement cameras are contracted out to private entities, who install/operate/maintain them for a cut of the violation payments. Doesn't cost the government a dime to collect their part of the fines, other than the money to operate the courts.....

Are you guys seeing anything like a protest? Here in Pot Hueneme, for 4/20, chief didn't even mention any change in details or any anticipation of civil unrest.

He did mention they put extra foot patrols out, but only on the Green Mile. Oh, and this month revenue projection is up

I don't know if I've told the story here before. Kind of funny. When I was a med student on Long Island I was heading home from the hospital when I came upon a Leo standing in the middle of the road shooting radar in a school zone he motioned for me to pull over. He said I was going a little fast, where was I coming from, yada yada. I told him where I was coming from and he said "OK just be careful there's another one up ahead" and I said "another speed trap?" And he said "no, another school zone!"
