There is a BMW dealer that has essentially the same build as mine, minus the carbon fiber trim. That deal is also at MSRP, but it is a MY23. That vehicle will be ready tomorrow.

Would you patiently wait for the carbon fiber trim and the year newer MY24? Or take delivery of the MY23 without carbon trim?
I personally would get the car that's available now. I could skip out on the interior trim for 2 extra months of car season this year. If it was like skipping the buckets, I'd wait for them.
MY23 vs MY24 doesn't really make a difference IMO. You will end up paying an extra $1000 for the MY24 as well.
Can also add aftermarket trims later on if you want.

Hahaha, I too am very excited for the day that I never have to see the lady with the freckles ever again. I feel like she's mocking me as she checks her MyBMW site and sees that the order she placed a week ago is already in transit.

It sounds like these are deals at two different dealers? Is there any loss by walking away from your build? Will you loose a deposit? Tough choice but if I had no penalty and didn’t burn a bridge and needed the car asap I’d buy the 23

As a client advisor my answer is totally biased, but this happens more than I would like to admit, and every time it feels like a slap in the face.

I work hard to earn a customer's business. I spend hours going through the build outlining the pros and cons of each option. I follow up with updates along the building process. And then a client backs out of a done deal for a car that wasn't even to their spec.

It might be the wrong answer from a professional standpoint, but when that happens, I'm done with that client. They have no loyalty and they have no more favors from me.

I also recognize that this is the profession that I have chosen, and I can change my profession at any time I like. Maybe I take things too personally when this is just business, but that is how I feel. Your client advisor with likely feel many of the same things.

If it were me before I was in this business I would probably take the earlier car and not think twice, but knowing what I know now, I would very easily wait fory car that I custom ordered with the client advisor that I built a relationship with. I say that after waiting 10 months for my M2 (delivered last week) and I still haven't driven it because I'm waiting for PPF.

Take my biased opinion as you will. I would wait for your custom order.

It should never be personal - it is a business relationship.

I really like my CA and look forward to doing business with him. But in the end, what he did for me in the ordering process is what a web page at Tesla's site does. I gave him a build code and my credit card, he put it in. So that is a low value activity.

The value he brings is knowing my interests and keeping me abreast of cool M cars that show up at the dealership, that may be options for me while I wait for my M2 to hopefully, finally, some day, be built and delivered.

Putting an order and providing status of an order is not something we should be using valuable human beings for - having to call a CA or a "genius" to get an update on an order in 2023 is an insult, not a valuable service. Having to check on a Website with the freckled young lady is also annoying. BMW should be pushing updates to my phone, whenever there is a status change, at the very least.

If its literally just the interior carbon trim, you have to ask yourself if that trim is worth $1800 ($800 trim + $1000 MSRP change) and a 2-3 month wait? If yes, then keep your allocation. If no, go with the MY23.

But as others have mentioned, there is the relationship factor. Given the car is “ready for transport” I wouldnt back out in the same scenario. But depends if you have a long term relationship with this CA, or if you plan to buy again from them. I’ve bought a couple cars from my CA, and he definitely let me skip the line for my M2 allocation. That’s worth something.

Enough of this tracking app BS already

I've just about had enough. Earlier I posted that my order was progressing with relatively little drama, but my vehicle has been stuck in port for two weeks now.

I told my CA I wasn't excited about taking delivery of a '23 model as the 24s were already in production, and he said no problem, he could take my name off this car and put me back in line for a November allocation for a '24.

And why would he be upset if he knows he can sell my order to someone foaming at the mouth to get into any M2?

I may just go that route. I have a ZB with full carbon pack and manual, but I might wait until better color/individualization options are available than on the initial '23 run.

A large part of this for me is the absolute BS "tracking" software that BMW has set up. It overpromises and underdelivers. Seriously, 15 stations in the process and MAYBE I have seen the vehicle hit 4 of those? If this is OK for BMW corporate, it makes you wonder what else is being overpromised and underdelivered.

I ordered a Porsche last year, and they have a production and tracking program that actually works. Of course they have less than half of the 15 "stations" that BMW maintains in their tracking program, and they send you pictures of your car while it is being manufactured.

Even though their cars have to be on a boat all the way from Germany, the Porsche tracking software is heads and shoulders above this poorly conceived and executed BMW variant.

Put down a deposit June 2022. Received my allocation May 5th for July production. After being pushed back many times I am now being told my production won’t start until February. I just don’t understand why other carbon packs that were allocated after mine are already in production and mine will most likely not be shipped until a year after reciving the allocation.

I spent 30 minutes with my CA and already feel broship. Can’t do him dirty, ordering a 25 next fall.

I mean… the M2 has like 6 options so you couldn’t have spent that long going thru the “pros and cons” of each, certainly not hours on end.

Let’s be honest here. 90% of people that go into a dealership get assigned to a random CA, and that’s who they go with. The individual makes no difference when you’re ordering a car to your spec. Like someone else said, this is done on a web page at places like Tesla and it’s even easier without a CA. Maybe if it’s some person that knows nothing about cars and needs advice, but that doesn’t happen with M cars much. Sure if they have a pleasant experience they’ll buy another car from you years later, but the CA is not usually the differentiator, the pricing/availability is.

For you to say if they back out or change their mind you’re “done with that client” is just silly. This isn’t a Bugatti. Realistically it’s not even your call to make, it’s your managers. You would probably work with that customer again any day of the week if they came back ready to buy another car. If it was so bad and you refused, they’d get assigned a different CA and it would make no difference to the Customer.

You were never “doing them favors”, you were simply doing what you’re paid to do. It’s your job, not a favor, to run a 30 second VIR every so often and check on an order. So stop making it sound like having a CA is some exclusive thing you can deny them if they back out of a deal to save months of time. There is a BMW dealer every 10 miles with a dozen different CAs.

I’m not saying you don’t work hard or aren’t a good CA, or don’t deserve a loyal customer. I love my CA and will 100% order my next bmw from them. But if I found a better price elsewhere, or I could get the same spec and save 3 months of summer, I would jump ship without much of a thought. Buying a car is a simple business transaction, not a marriage.

Tons of people willingly paid $5-10k markups on HEA cars to get them a few months early. Months of time is usually more important to someone than being loyal to a random salesman they were assigned to.

On this note, I would not consider working with a CA a "relationship," as I do not pledge any loyalty or allegiance. I will not feel obligated to purchase another vehicle from them in the future, but I will happily recommend them if the experience is relatively painless or post a positive review.

Thank you all for your opinions and responses! Definitely a tough decision mainly because I'm anxious to get the car lol. But ultimately sticking with my allocation mainly due to this ^ I have a great relationship with my CA and I'm in the business myself too. I feel everything you said Rx-7ames!

Having a good relationship with your CA is great but as Michael Corleone said, “It’s not personal, it’s strictly business”.
Edit: props to my CA who has been all over my order since day 1. Will give him every opportunity on the wife’s X4 M40i next year.

According to BMW, cars can be at the US port for extended times "depending on port installed options selected and availability of those parts".

So somewhere in a port-side warehouse in Galveston there are probably two monkeys bickering over which end to hold the screwdriver. Great.
