You might have gotten the original part index shocks. I believe the index 2 shocks are quieter, but the cars all make some noise. The earlier cars are louder than the newer ones; at least that’s been my experience doing the PDI on a bunch of 22’s and 23’s.

Is there a new part number or revision to reference if we were to take it into the dealer?

mine does it in all modes. Maybe it more noticeable in sport? But either way, it always does it. I hadnt driven my G42 in maybe 3 weeks until yesterday. Pulling out of my driveway I got the thump, and was like "OH YA I forgot it does that. cool :/"

Add me to the list of thumping didn’t know there was a threat for this, but it seems like I’m experiencing the same noise that you guys are explaining and it just seems like it’s getting slightly worse with time and driving getting louder and more frequently!

Is anyone aware of a revision number or new part number?
My oil change is due soon and will be doing it myself again unless I can get this resolved at the same time at the dealer. Otherwise I have no issues with the car and love it so far |

Fingers crossed that this gets resolved but every day that passes gives me less confidence in a resolution.

I had what I think you all explain as the rear suspension thump on my F22. Kind of sounds like a baseball in a wooden box, only over bumps. I got used to it in that car and figured it was normal considering how stiff the suspension was. I think my G42 does something similar, although less prominent. I'll likely just waive it off as the same thing as my last car. Compared to interior parts rattling and ticking, this is the lesser of the evils for me.

It’s pretty insane that there was never an official fix put out there for us. I have to assume that they did resolve it for new productions though, otherwise I think there would be a lot more talk about it on here. It’s too consistent and obvious for every car to have it yet so few owners seem bothered.
My dealership is in an extremely dense and crowded area where it’s futile to try and keep a car nice. I’m way too picky about my cars condition to leave it there and allow them to drive it who knows how many times before they admit they hear it, acquiring rock chips and door dings on the daily until I gave up and retrieved it |

The struts are also probably completely different. So not the best comparison. Need people with a 2024 m240 to start chiming in as they get their cars. |

I picked up my '24 M240ix a week ago. So far I haven't noticed any thumping in sport mode coming from the rear. However, I've only driven a couple hundred miles and I'm not exactly sure of the sound I should be listening for.

It sounds like a rubber ball moving around in a wooden box in the trunk on the passenger side. Not super loud, but you’ll definitely hear it with the radio off if you are affected |

Guess I'm one of the fortunate ones---replacement of the rt rr shock and mount/s solved my problem. Probably 5000 miles since replacement and the GD sound has not returned. Good luck. |

My other concern is that it may in fact be the rear parcel shelf that is making the noise. Plastic on metal or plastic on the rear glass. We’ll see… |

So ANNOYING!
Brand new G42 M240i built in July 2023 and delivered to me only 3 weeks ago has the exact same noise as everyone is describing in this thread… BMW have my car right now and told me “it’s a normal noise” - I am beyond frustrated with it… who’s leading the charge in escalating this? Any help much appreciated! |

Update: I must officially withdraw myself from this thread. After revisiting my rear parcel shelf rattle, I have determine that the rear parcel shelf is 100% the cause of my sound, not the suspension. I cut up more of my pool noodle and wedged it far down in between the glass and the plastic trunk vent. This eliminated 90% of the rattle. Now I must take apart almost all of the rear interior to properly address the rest of the issue.
Apparently, the cause is the plastic vent coming in contact with the metal roof of the trunk. Look up forum member “Coconut” for more information. Thought I’d share this here for anyone else looking in the wrong direction trying to solve this annoying ass noise. |
