If you buy an M2 with an auto your buying the wrong car.

Enlighten me. I’m buying the auto, what auto car do you suggest if the m2 is wrong?
I have up to $90-95k and no utility requirements.

Because sone people think if you aren't buying the 6MT you are wasting your money. Get what you want, for whatever reasons.

I can tell you, paddle shifting the 8AT with traction control off, in sport +, chassis +, tuned trans set at III and pushing over 700whp is extremely engaging and will blow the doors of the 6MT.

Because the M2 is essentially a stripper M3/M4. If you want more interior options, etc then you could get one of those in your budget. You can also get higher HP and all wheel drive.

I have an i4 M50 and want the M2 because I want the driving dynamics and don't care about interior options.

Buy what you want, but the real value in the M2 is an M4 drive train on the cheap, sort of.

I don't tell folks how to spend their money because I don't want people telling me how to spend mine.

If you upgrade the clutch on a manual transmission car with same power as auto I don’t think the auto will blow the doors off the manual. It’ll beat it but not by much in a roll race.

He said pushing 700hp.
You don't want to do that with a MT.

2023 BMW M2  [10.00]
This thread has been fun.

I agree with many of the Auto folks on the forum - if it's what you want then buy it, certainly the M2 with the ZF8 is a great car and a huge amount of fun to drive. It's also easier to drive hard than the manual.

However, for those that bought the MT, including me, we wanted what we bought.

I don't understand why folks cannot get their heads around that. I am just grateful BMW offered the M2 in a manual, it hit my sweet spot of size, performance and cost. It also means I really cannot tune the car and that is fine with me.

So to the auto team - you don't need to justify your purchase to the manual team. You just chose differently for your own different reasons. Same for color choice and other options (not that there are any - lol).

From all the posts, it seems both sides trying to justify their purchase.

I have a dct f87 comp and I've ordered a g87 manual. I've never owned a manual car before but these seem like they have enough assists to make it not a miserable experience for everyday use

??? The only manual-specific assist in the G87 is auto revmatch on downshift. Which is useful to be sure, but it's not exactly a LOT of help.

For example, some MT cars have auto-cruise and/or auto-creep, but the G87 does not.

Overall, the MT G87 is a nice daily driver, that's how I use mine.

But I fully admit that the AT would be nicer in heavy traffic, and I miss having a few extra overdrive gears for long highway runs. But it's a price I'm glad to pay to row my own gears.

Giving a reason for which transmission one chose is one thing but MT owners saying the "only real" option (or similar statement...and there are a number of threads/posts like this) is the MT is the reason for combative responses. That is a big difference...

MT vs auto isn’t the issue! If you aren’t Flinstoning it to feel the road are you even a real driver?

He’s said 700 wheel HP which is even more but the torque is more concerning. There are manual g80 guys with that much power and just need aftermarket clutch.

Really? Miatas have had hill hold since 2016-ish. Jeeps had it earlier than that (the ones I've been in, anyway). Supras have it. GR86 has it.

What MT doesn't have hill hold in in 2024?

I think that's a mischaracterization. I think the core argument is more like "the M2 has far fewer competitors if you want an MT. If you want an AT, there more competitors, like an Audi RS3 or an M240i."

I think the argument has some merit, there are some people that would have not chosen an M2 if other certain cars had MT.

Disclosure: I am one of those people. The only thing that put the M2 ahead of the M240i was the MT option, since I needed a DD. If I was tracking the car, I'd argue there are still better options for the money. (BTW, it still hurts that that we lost the SS 1LE. RIP.)

So from my POV, it's less a gatekeeping thing and a more a confusion thing. I'm not sure what's super compelling about the M2 if you want an AT. (I'm sure there are reasons, I've just never looked into it.)

My bad I thought miatas still didn't have it, the list of new cars even offering manual transmissions is really short now

I don’t really get the “If you want an auto just get an M240” thing. Apples and Oranges, really.

It's an aftermarket clutch with lots of effort and chatter. Things that an OEM doesn't like.

Late to the party but no didn't consider the auto. I had an MKV supra (AT) and I got the M2 because of the hassle/ADM of the MT Supra allocations/just getting one. If I wanted an auto, I was perfectly happy with my auto supra but I didn't want one, I wanted one "last" hurrah before MTs were impossible to get.
