The more reviews I see the more I want a 1M or F87 CS. The older Ms seemed to place driver engagement first and everything else secondary. The G series cars seem to place tech/comfort first and driver engagement second.

From my understanding the ZF has a an electric torque assist MOTOR inside the transmission. Now regarding the weight , I can contribute to this because my 2020 F87 competition felt like a tank compared to my 2020 M4 Comp. When I purchased my M4, I am mediately noticed the light weight difference in the doors the hood, the trunk.

Seems like Bmw to save weight on the M2, it uses a lot more steel construction. Where is the M3 M4 use a lot more aluminum to save weight.

Not applicable on the G87 automatic. Both the auto and the manual are full ICE. This vehicle is the end of the line for that at BMW M.

I had to pinch myself when I read that.

Glad to have a taste of it though.

Garage List
Road and Track review

Key points from R&T:

- "The M2 feels at least as quick as its 0-60 time suggests on the road, with strong pickup and plenty of grunt through the rev range. There’s a distinct gap in torque under 4000 rpm compared to the M3’s powerband, but it’s not so detrimental as to call it a fault. In fact, it gives the M2’s drivetrain some character compared to its bigger sibling.

- BMW says the six-speed manual is a total carryover, all the way from the gearing right down to the shifter linkage. I’d swear the shifter’s throw is slightly shorter and clickier than in the M3’s, but that could come down to the knob’s placement on the dash or my seating position. It could also be my mind playing tricks on me. Either way, it feels like BMW paid more attention to the inputs here. There’s standard auto rev-matching, though unlike the first M2, where you needed to turn off traction control to switch off rev-matching, it can now be switched off independently within the iDrive infotainment system.

- The front springs are stiffer and the rear springs are softer versus the M4, a bid to improve initial turn-in and maintain the M2’s neutrality through corners. There are also reinforcements in the C-pillar and trunk areas to improve overall chassis strength. The ride is taught but never crashy, and the chassis itself is as stiff as anything this side of a carbon fiber monocoque. Still, overall handling is excellent. The previous M2 was a brute. It was fast and fun, but its relatively small footprint meant it was easy to overwhelm the chassis with the engine’s power delivery. No longer.

- The electrically assisted steering is good, not great. BMW has come a long way with its EPS, though don’t expect Porsche or Mazda levels of feedback. Feel is muted, and there’s more input needed versus an M4. In some ways the slower rack feels more natural, making the M2 easier to place.

- The wide haunches look purposeful and do a lot to help the car stand out in a crowd, especially when paired to the standard quad exhaust tips out back. The flares also make it incredibly easy to spot a 2023 M2 from miles away. … This new car isn’t pretty, but it isn’t boring, either.

- The 2023 BMW M2 is priced from $63,195, including destination, placing it squarely against cars like the Audi RS3 and the Mercedes-AMG CLA45 S. While those compact AWD sedans provide more practicality, the M2’s superior dynamics and manual gearbox option make it a clear winner. Option that carbon pack and things get a bit more interesting, as MSRP begins to knock on the door of a base M3. We know which we’d rather have—the M2 is plenty quick and miles more fun, plus it looks nicer. For the past seven years the M2 has been M’s most enjoyable car. And this 2023 model is even better."

I'm still in.

Me too! And on twisty Oregon mountain roads (my favorite place to drive), the lack of rear axle hop (which activates traction control at the worst possible moment on bumpy curves) will be a huge improvement! That's my biggest beef with my F87.

I'll add Apex wheels, a lithium battery, and catted downpipe. That should cut 52 or so lbs, and probably open up the low end a bit.

Seems like the automatic is the one to have. Every reviewer gave it high marks.

I may switch my custom allocation build to the ZF8. Will drive both before making that decision, though.

Why is everyone so hung up on throttle house’s review?

I haven’t watched all the reviews yet, but from all the ones that i have watched , it’s been overall glowing reviews! And most , not all, prefer the manual

I suspect we will see some of this due to these reviews, but not much. Those that generally want a manual are unwilling to waiver from it, especially for a true automatic.

As previously stated, many years down the road, the manual G87 will be highly coveted. If anyone is planning to keep theirs indefinitely then order the manual.

Think I’m gonna do the same - and trade my DCT OG M2 for a manual OG

I have been told by staff at all 3 dealers I've used over the years that they don't care if you add a short shift kit. It doesn't affect the engine, emissions or other key areas. It would only be a problem if the LINKAGE you added failed. Of course the dealer would not cover that.

But, stick with a reputable source, like Rogue, UUC, AutoSolutions, Dinan, Turner

It SHOULD eliminate rubbery feel some of the reviewers discussed.

short shift kit shouldn't be an issue. the chance that causes damage is pretty much zero. dealer needs to prove that your mod caused the damage. they can't just say 'oh we aren't covering your cracked brake rotor because you installed an akra exhaust'.

It’s been almost a decade since my religiousness around manuals faded. A great automatic experience can offer similar thrills, if not more.

The way M2 reviewers’ tone changes when they hop in the ZF8 car is saying a lot. Even Throttle House admitted the ZF8 meaningfully improved the drive. I’ll still drive both and see for myself.

If I need a 6MT keeper, there’s always the final year car (or special edition a la F87 CS).

Well, I'm not a huge fan of the new M2 like a lot here seem not to be also. But I'll say this, I've gotten "over" a lot of changes in cars over the years (grew up in the 80s), so accepting bigger heavier cars is just a thing we have to deal with nowadays. And the looks, well, lots of M3 and M4 G-generation guys seem to like their cars, so I think a lot of new M2 owners will also have pride in their new car, even if the F-generation is far better looking. It still seems to be a true "M" car and all that means these days...a great "GT" car, not sports car.

This is a good car but not what most M2 fans where expecting, specially looks wise not to mention the weight.
Isn’t that you?

There are literally a dozen reviews that give the G87 top marks that you’ve chosen to ignore.

My desire for a manual has not waned and that will continue so long as I am healthy and my left knee/leg have little to no issues.

A reminder for some here that the likelihood that a special edition of a G87 will be offered with a manual is rather slim. The current CS and CSL are living proof of that. Just something to keep in mind.
