We got a call of a dog on the freeway in a blizzard. I found him up against a fence that blocks a street from the freeway and footprints on the one side. Some ahole dropped him off on the freeway side. Guess someone got him for Christmas and couldn’t house train him. It took me months to house train him.

The husky I got this January when some lady dropped her off in our lobby and said she’s too hyper and took off. I didn’t try hard enough to go out and get her or her plate since I was instantly enamored by the baby husky. My guess is another bad choice for a Christmas present.

That's awesome of you to do that. My wife and daughter would take in any stray or rescue they could.....and they outvote me so there you go.

But I try to keep us on the "foster" side of things until we find good homes as we have enough permanent pets of our own.

Oh yeah. My daughter takes in every animal she can. We were on vacation at Fort Bragg visiting my son and my daughter brought in a cat from off the street!!
Between her mom’s house and my house my daughter has three dogs, 11 cats, two rabbits and a hamster. Most of them are rescues that I never rehomed.

I did pull a baby fox out of a sewer one night and the dept of natural resources said hold it till morning. Sadly it didn’t make it till morning

Good for you for doing that!

And great picture of the shepherd again on the park bench. My wife was adamant about the fact that we will never have a Shepherd (the shedding is part of it, but she also sees them as more dangerous / aggressive having never owned one, just seeing them in public).

Happily though, over the past 9 years, I've worn her down a little and she has come around to the idea that maybe a Shepherd would be a good idea from a defense perspective since we live in the country and there were one or two break-ins on the street.. Our current Lab wouldn't harm a fly, so he's useless. But we agreed we would wait till the kids are older and know better about dogs (have one that is 4 and one that isn't quite 2). For their age, our Lab is wonderful. When he passes, we'll likely get a Shepherd, I figure we probably can get another 4-6 years from the Lab.

German Shep's are wonderful dogs for the family and for protecting the homestead. They aren't like other dogs and generally only have affection for the family members-they won't fawn over strangers and any intruder will be asked to leave. haha
They can be aggressive towards other dogs but that can be discouraged from the onset and can be totally trained to ignore them.

my shepard has adopted the attitude of my goldendoodle when it comes to my boys. she is now used as a tackling dummy just like the doodle without complaint. i do see that she can be aggressive towards other dogs but she quiets down quick when given a command. i often wonder how she would react with an intruder in the house

Females are less aggressive than the males but can surely act as deterrents to any entry with their alert behavior and bark.

They are great family dogs, extremely loyal to the family and no one else. I've had two at different times growing up, always liked them. Extremely smart too.

That being said, my lab is equally smart as the Shepherds I had. I think that's somewhat rare for Labs though.

They sure are great family dogs; got mine as a gift from a family friend with a litter-omg, this dog was a tremendous athlete and went everywhere with me including the pond to pay hockey. He would carry logs in his mouth 6 inches in diameter for me to throw-105 pounds yet very docile and friendly around the clan. There was no leash law growing up-would try to catch snow while shoveling-greatest dog ever next to the one I have now.

My daughter was messing with my phone and took a pretty cool pic of 10 month old Kira. She was finally tired for once.

My two mutts. The Westie, Wesley, is about 6.5 years old. The terrier mix, Finley, is about 1 and a half and is a little ball of energy. He is a riot.

Used to have saltwater fish but had to give them up when we moved to an apartment in Baltimore. No wet pets allowed.

Most dog intelligence lists I've seen rank Labs and Golden retrievers in the top 6, along with shepards, standard poodles, and the kings, the border collies.

Don't know where the Miniature Schnauzer ranks....but the one we have is the smartest dog I have ever owned.

But....I have owned some pretty "slow" breeds so maybe that skews things!
