We recently adopted a stray cat. Had been keeping an eye on her as she would regularly come to the house so we'd feed her and became concerned now that the weather is getting much colder, etc. Took her to the local county shelter and checked whether she was chipped or not, she wasn't. Also got her vaccinated and scheduled her to get spayed in a couple of weeks.

Best guess is she's around 3 months old or so. Unbelievably adorable and loves being pet. Cats in the wild are typically afraid of people and will often run away. This particular one was more mild mannered. We just decided that we wanted her to be part of the family.

She's been a happy camper ever since.

Thanks. Yeah she's a little beauty.
The sad thing is there are so many strays out there as you know, the female feral cats will continue to get impregnated and give birth to litter after litter and eventually they die due to malnutrition or attacked by predators when young. If they are picked up by animal control they go to the shelter system and often times get euthanized if no one adopts them. Same thing with dogs of course. It's truly sad but I feel that if I can make at least a small difference for the life of a single creature, it's worth it.

Thank goodness there are a number of rescue groups and no kill shelters, but still not enough of them because of the sheer numbers of animals being dealt with.

Back in the 90s there was a feline AIDS epidemic here and cats were dying like crazy from it. We had a few (3) cats back then and they were inside/outside cats and they all caught it and had to be euthanized.

Since then we never let our cats out even though there is no longer an epidemic. There's too many bad things that can happen to them. Mainly we live in a foothill community and coyotes roam at night.

We currently have only one cat and she is about 10 years old, we think. We adopted her from the local shelter 8 years ago and they thought she was about 2yo.

Her name is Samantha...

That's a very pretty cat.
It's a shame your other ones had to be euthanized.

I would be scared to let my cats outside especially when there are natural predators like coyotes around. Our cats are strictly house cats and they become spoiled princesses as a result. Lol. Well, we only have two of them now. You had already seen photos of the other one I believe.

This is Kona. She is the first cat we adopted.

Our local cat saving group is pushing the 'TNR' solution for feral cats - Trap, Neuter, Release. It is really more like "feed and get to know them; collect and fix as many as you can; return the ones nobody fell in love with back to the outside (the ones that are so feral they won't tolerate being with foster families). A really great program, part of the push to achieve total no-kill nationwide someday.

Still waiting on the pathology report. They are culturing out the tissue samples they took to see what grows. Apparently that takes 10 to 14 days.

CT scan showed some mild to moderate scarring in her lungs from the pneumonia. She also has inflammation in her lungs and lower airway, consistent with a chronic bronchitis. Once we have the pathology results back we can formulate a treatment plan.

We already decided that we will throw meds at this, but that's it. No more scopes and scans and procedures. It's just too much for her to go through. We will keep the antibiotics at the ready in case she comes down with it again and hope they work. But no more rushing her to the ER vet where they plunk her into an oxygen chamber for 5 days. If / when she comes down with Pneumonia again if the antibiotics dont remedy it, we will have to do the right thing by her and end it. it's terrifying knowing that it's coming but not knowing when. She went nearly 10 years between pneumonia episode 1 and 2. But then episode 3 was just 4 months after episode 2. In all cases she was totally normal in appearance, then barely able to breathe in a matter of just a few hours. So it comes on in the blink of an eye. all we can really do is be happy that she's happy and comfortable right here, right now, today. Tomorrow we will worry about tomorrow.

You're someone who understands Wifey and me. When we moved here, our neighbors "loved kittens" and would feed feral cats just to see the kittens every now and then. Over the years we've trapped and spayed/neutered at least 25 cats. We had the whole thing under control for years until the horse barn near us changed owners. The new owner went and got himself a bunch of strays (don't know where from) and set them loose to hunt mice. But he didn't do anything about controlling reproduction. So now we have lots of kitten issues again. We adopted one kitten and found a home for another, but until we TNR all the females, the kittens will continue to be an issue. Irresponsible pet owners really anger me.

We used to help with this on Fire Island. The "Summer residents" would go home & leave kitty....
