1955 VW

This is my ‘55 Beetle, I did the restoration myself about 20 years ago. The 2110 cc engine give a lot more excitement than how it left the factory.

Welcome and thanks for sharing your stunning '55 VW with us. Questions:

When you restored, did you upgrade the transmission to syncromesh
Did you convert electrical system from 6 to 12 volt?

Thank you and yes to both, the transaxle has full syncro gears, it is a replacement unit called a Transform Pro Street Freeway Flyer. Has higher ratio 4th gear to lower RPM at highway speed. It is also already clearanced for the 12 v flywheel. Everything was changed to 12 volts except the semaphores (which is painfully expensive, just can’t leave them up for extended periods). I don’t think a 6 volt starter would crank this engine. 2110 cc, 9:1 compression ratio, 90.5 bore x 82 stroke.

They're flip out indicators instead of signal lights.

I had a '61 so I wasn't familiar with the flip out indicators either. How cool is that!

The person in the yellow T-shirt is in one of the most dangerous spots in all of motorsports, standing in the fragmentation path if a launching car has a flywheel or clutch explode from the shock stress.....

Very, very nice! 👍

I almost bought a split-window VW from a fellow soldier while I was
based in Germany, 1968. It had mechanical semiphore turn signals,
if I recall correctly. Then I got orders for Vietnam, so had to cancel
the purchase.

I just went back and looked at your photos again. I've always thought the VW bug was a cool design, but looking at the lines closely through your photos, I've got a whole new appreciation for just how beautiful this car is put together design-wise. I'm no expert at describing things, but all of the lines of this car come together so nicely, including those beautiful little taillights. While the newer bugs, '62 on, had bigger, safer, and more functional taillights, the little taillights flowed with the overall design of the car so nicely. With your amazing paint job, this car is a work of art to my absolutely biased eyes.
