Many of us are getting our cars delivered soon, and many have just come in recently. This has me thinking about maintenance plans and BMW Ultimate Care.

Those of you with prior M car experience in F8x and G8x, how many miles will we typically get out of front and rear brakes on a car that isn’t tracked? I’m seeing in the M3/M4 threads, talk of 10-12K miles out of the rear because they are so small. Then I’m hearing of full brake changes (assume pads and rotors) of $5K from the dealer.

I’m just wondering if it makes any sense at all to get any of the Ultimate Care packages? I’m thinking about MAYBE getting the lowest one at $850 but that only covers 3 years.

I’ve been doing brakes since I was 16, and it’s not that bad of a job. Doing a brake job on the M’s doesn’t look that bad at all, from what I’ve seen. The pads for the front are the most expensive at ~$300/set, rears MUCH less. And I’m hearing 2 piece rotors will soon be available for around $300’ish. Also, I imagine new rotors won’t be required on every pad change. Can these drilled rotors be turned, or do they just have to be replaced? The thought of paying a dealer $5K for a set of brakes is bananas.

Any thoughts from those much more knowledgeable for us new M owners?

I just called BMW Genius and they said that my car has been assigned a carrier, but not yet arrived at port of departure. They were unable to say which port it would be headed to. So they either keep the cars at BMW until they get assigned to a vessel and then ship them, or the status is not up to date. Because the week 38 builds all finished by the 20th and were shipped and loaded onto the Glovis Cardinal 4 days later on the 24th in Veracruz.

For reference, my car was in Ready for Transport since Oct 1, and it still says Ready for Transport today.

I guess if they're waiting to batch as many cars together as possible (one hypothesis), shipping it so close to the Glovis Cardinal wouldn't make sense. I'm also glad they're not storing the cars at the port for a month, if true, because some of the initial G87s had problems with their brakes or brake pads because of the moisture/early rust from what I heard.

Well that is a step in the right direction maybe? Its amazing that with all the technology we have, we do not have any way of tracking cars that go from factory to port to ship. Evidently even BMW reps can't track them. Are they not scanned at a certain point or something and when they finally are scanned then you get all these updates all at once?

ok I just called BMW Genius as well...mine is on the way to the "port" (as my CA mentioned last week) but there is no carrier assignment according to Genius...They also didn't know which port it was being shipped from (Being delivered to Port NJ for me)
I assume that once I get a carrier assignment my status will jump to "at the port" assuming that it should probably be there already since its been in transit from the factory for like 6 days.

FYI, as far as I know, carrier assignment only refers to transport to the port from the factory. That's different than being assigned to an Ocean Freight. Does anyone know different?

Just checked it today and I am now in 154 status. I guess for me, I might get stuck at port for the MSport HAS... and we then would get the cars at the same time probably.

Man... 4 weeks would be amazing. I'd love to have it by middle November.

I too have a HAS port install.

4 weeks is sunny day scenario. Hit the ship/port/truck just right. 6 is more likely. 8 can happen.

Just too many variables. There’s a lot of container traffic this time of the year (holiday goods coming in).

***** Thank You so much for posting this. It is in fact the best description and makes the most sense. Other lists tended to have the codes from Germany and Spartanburg.

The list you posted makes a lot more sense, and you really need to look at the code from the tracker site (browser trick) and use this list to understand the actual status. What the tracker site lists as text status is slightly wrong in some stages. I highlighted some of the key stages.

My order was placed on 9/20. My Garage shows in Final Assembly as of today. My dealer is in Washington, DC area. I assume my port of entry is Baltimore.

FYI, you can find your port of entry on your sales order/vehicle inquiry report that you signed to place your order.

Congrats, you'll get your car from order to delivery faster than anyone here by a mile. Not sure if waitlists have disappeared, or if you're really lucky. Either way, congrats!

Given the ever growing list of M2s showing in dealer stock, I'd say there are many slots open for dealer stock orders, so any sold customer order will get priority.

Glovis Cardinal has left Baltimore, but is apparently making it's next stop in Philly.

I am a bit surprised that they stop at both Philly and New Jersey. Must be another brands cars getting offloaded in Philadelphia?

I go over the Walt Whitman bridge in Philly A LOT and I know a see a Hyundai building and tons of cars from them there. I’m not sure what other brands get unloaded there but I would expect there is at least a couple others. That being said I have no idea where factories for those cars are so…

I just got an email answer from the BMW Genius confirming that my car is at the Veracruz port waiting for a ship assignment.

So, at least in my case, the shipping port is confirmed as Veracruz, not Altamira.

Not sure if anyone knows the schedule of next one or two vessels departing Veracruz for the East Coast.

Yeah, even when I bent my wheel, it only cost $100 to unbend it. Would be nice for a direct replacement though. But good point nonetheless. I'll avoid.

Yeah, I'm curious about that too. I will say, my brakes on my Golf R lasted quite long. I didn't drive her too hard, but after 40k miles, she still had half her pads left, so I'm hoping the M2 lasts just as long, unless I take her to the track and all bets are off lol.

Congrats. That’s fast for the port install.

Hope you can have it for the weekend.

I found this list of Vehicle Carriers with familiar references. I have seen many posts here and elsewhere where cars were shipped by one of Glovis, RCC, or Grand and I had falsely assumed they were managed differently. So I thought that any Vehicle Carrier in port could bring our cars over...but after seeing this list, I believe it explains why our cars didn't get onto the Frontier Ace which just left port. We should probably expect our cars to get on the next ship that shows up from this list instead. I have no idea how to figure that out though.
