Not sure if this will help at all, but I reached out to BMW USA and BMW customer relations regarding the issue. If anyone has time, I would suggest contacting them as well so that they are aware that this thumping sound is NOT normal and other people are NOT satisfied with the current state of things. PM me if you want an email template

Ok so I got a call back from BMW NA today. They are in the process of investigating my complaint/claim. It sounds like their next step is to contact my dealer who performed the initial investigation and strut replacement. After that, he mentioned the next step would include taking another look at the issue and it sounded like they would have a tech from BMW NA present.
It’s possible that other members on this forum have had this done already. Either way, I think it is important that we all submit complaints NOW. If there is enough noise they may try to shut us all up and fix the damn issue. It’s worth a try anyways… I’m just fed up with hearing this fucking noise all the time. If you have 2-5 minutes, please either fill out the form on this website and/or send an email to the address below. This is what I have done and is what prompted their call-back. I don’t want to accept that this is a “normal” sound or “nuisance noise” or what ever other bullshit they may say. Thank you!! https://www.bmwusa.com/contact-us.html CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com |

I submitted my feedback on Tuesday night. I got an email response today. It basically said sorry to hear I am experiencing this issue. They recommended I take it into the dealer and have them evaluate it. I said I hadn’t done that because dozens of people already had with no answers. They did say it would be logged/forwarded to the “design and production teams” but at that point it was in the from letter response section.
You know what would get their attention? If they actually do have you come in for the NA Tech and a bunch of us show up with our cars at the same time and say “take your pick….they all do this” |

My G42 had its first dealer service today. Its unlikely I will ever take it back again, so I will start installing more of my mods. If the weather stays decent I will put it up on my 2-post lift for a bit, and if anyone has any great ideas on less than obvious things to poke around at to look for the sound, I will be happy to take suggestions. Otherwise I will proceed with just banging on things and tugging on random parts etc desperating seeking a source of the sound.

One dud on the FB group said that installed ohlins spring and damper resolved the issue for him. I’m skeptical |

The dealership ordered a new center armrest and some related parts to correct the interior buzzing sound (which both the SA and tech agreed was very annoying). They had much more difficulty pinning down the source of the rear thump, which is much more apparent in SPORT mode. They had the tech ride with me in my car so I could point out exactly what abnormal sound I was hearing. (The sound I hear sometimes when I go over a bump is like there is a softball rolling around inside my trunk.) They also wanted to find another M240ix on the lot so we could drive and compare to my car in terms of any abnormal sounds, but none were to be had. After some discussion with the tech about what other people on this forum have experienced with this rear thump problem and subsequent repairs by replacing the rear shocks and upper mounts, the tech agreed to give it a try and order the parts. He said he really was not certain this would correct the problem, but he was willing install the 2 new rears shocks and upper mounts in the hopes that this would fix it. I will post an update once the replacement suspension parts are installed on my car (as well as all the part numbers).

I know a guy who does suspension R&D and owns a shock dyno. Maybe if I flipped him $100-200 he would run a test on the shocks to look for anything there, and maybe open it up to look for anything obvious. |

If the right rear strut is a unique part and completely different from the other three, then it’s possible it is the problem. But if it’s not a unique part then It’s very unlikely that every single defective one just happens to always be installed in the right rear. |

But ya I just checked the microfiche and I actually see no evidence in here myself of the shocks even having a different part number left/right in this car. So that does pretty much throw out the shocks being related since everyone only hears this coming from the right side of the car. FWIW, the M2 does have different L/R rear shocks. But it also seems to share virtually nothing in the rear suspension. The crossmember and spindles and you name it are all a different design. Last edited by PNTDG42; 03-18-2024 at 08:01 PM.. |

Looking at the pics that were posted in the other thread about the exhaust being installed…how close is the pipe to whatever that is covered by the heat shield. From this angle it looks close enough that it might hit it the exhaust were moving horizontally. Probably grasping at straws lol

For the record, I dropped my car off at BMW on Monday for two days and picked it up on Tuesday evening.
I had a noise on the right rear side of the car, it was loud, it was systematic, and not especially on bumps, just a small difference in level was enough to cause the "thump". The right rear spring (or is it shock absorber, sorry English is not my mother tongue) was replaced because it was faulty. I'm not able to give the reference of anything because they didn't provide it to me. I don't want to rejoice too quickly, but clearly that systematic thump has disappeared. I say systematic because I still hear it, but much less loud and only on very bumpy roads. Moral of the story: it's hard to compare two situations, but if you have the problem, go to the dealership, insist that it's the right rear spring and maybe that'll help. |

I’m sure you’ve seen the other thread where coilovers were installed and this apparently eliminated the thump.
I’m trying to remember if this contradicts anything we’ve heard before from failed attempts. Has there been anyone who has replaced the shocks with non OEM ones and still heard it? Several have replaced them with the same part num and it doesn’t fix it. Ppl have swapped out springs and it doesn’t fix it. So maybe?? The only problem is I don’t want to spend $3-4k to fix something that shouldn’t be there in the first place. Still it’s good information. |

I think its pretty clear that we can use M340i shocks and/or springs in our car, since aftermarket parts listed for them are compatible. Maybe one of us needs to try fixing the thump by installing someones used M340i shocks leftover from them getting coilovers.

I really like EDC and am very tempted to just get those Bilstein coilovers and be done with it. There are a couple of highly rated BMW specialist garages in the area who do this kind of install all the time.
But it just doesn’t sit right that I’d have to spend the additional money to get around some kind of design or manufacturing defect. I’m going to give the dealer a chance try to debug this on my first service, but hopes are not high based on the number of people who’ve gone down that path already. |

So the cause and fix for the rear thump remains a mystery... BMW service had my car for 4 days. They replaced the following rear suspension parts. Unfortunately, this made no discernable difference in the rear thumping problem as the service tech readily admitted to me when I spoke with him directly after he completed replacing these parts. He told me that BMW is aware of this problem and they have a case file opened for it, but so far no cause has been found or has any repair been recommended to correct this problem. He told me that if BMW finds a fix for this problem or issues a TSB he will contact me. On the plus side, he was able to fix the annoying intermittent buzzing sound coming from my center console by replacing the following parts.

What’s your impression about his statement that they are aware of it etc? Think he was blowing smoke or did it seem sincere? Your results fit with what others have gotten. Replacing with the same parts doesn’t do anything. They should come ask for data from people here. The fact that aftermarket coilovers seems to fix it is a key bit of info they could use.
Thanks for the update! Maybe there’s a solution in the future?! |
