I would think it's because RWD has been BMW's lifeblood for such a long time and since they've now flooded the market with all sorts of xDrive variants they want to bring attention to the RWD capability again.

Or it's because people are like crows and like more shiny things.

"MUGEN POWER MOTOR GROUND TOURING GT"

Truth be told, the vast majority of drivers on the road will only notice the BMW badge, and that the car is a BMW.
Most people won't know the difference between an "M" and a regular numerical badge. It's really just amongst us BMW nerds...��
