There is a lot of wokeness going on here right now, anger at the residential schools, and colonialism. So of course the response has been to burn down several catholic churches and topple statues of Queen Victoria, and many of our founding fathers/architects of the residential school system.

Our PM is telling us this is the fault of all Canadians. It was the government (which has been liberal for 70% of the time) that built and designed the residential school system. The schools were then run by mostly the catholic church. No doubt taking children from their family's and not letting them speak their own language was heinous, but the current outrage stems from the fact that when these children died at the schools they were buried on the school property rather than returned home. The MSM and SJW are calling it murder, genocide etc. When you look at the facts and the way things were done at the time, you'd see that the deaths were about at the same level as in the rest of the population, tuberculous etc. But as often happens the facts shouldn't be allowed to get in the way of a good church burning.

It's interesting to hear about the issues taking place to the north of us. I hadn't heard anything about this until now.

I think the MSM in the US has enough to focus on south of the border.

Hopefully arsonists are all brought to justice.

Catholic church ran majority of school systems created to forcibly assimilate the indigenous children.

Children lived in horrible condition and were subject to beating and torture including homemade electric chair. Their death rate was way WAY higher than normal, up to five times higher than among Canadian children as a whole.

Canadian government has apologized but not the Church, the same church that covered up rape of little boys for year.

Actually, the death rates were about in keeping with children that remained on reserves and the general population. The churches ran the schools but they were set up by the government, and under government mandate to assimilate the children. There is a lot of misinformation out there. Here are a couple of informative posts that might assist.

Never knew about the "realwomenofcanada", but boy what a trip! It is utterly insane that you think that's an unbiased source.

Please don't make this about politics, it only concerns human decency. And the natives on either side of the boarder deserve a little of it after what they have been through.

I'm not making anything about politics, I'm just trying to shine a light where many don't want to look. I've worked pretty extensively with FN and fly in communities. It is a long complicated story and the media and politicians seem to have agenda's that aren't always reflective of the full truth.

"That truth is that children were removed from often desperate situations and sent to sparse boarding schools..."

This statement from one of the articles caught my attention. Here in the U.S., Native Americans were also "removed" from their reservations to "assimilate" them into the American communities. Much of this was done against the wishes of both student and family. I don't doubt that the same was done in Canada. While I realize also that pneumonia and influenza was rampant, as I understand, these two are often spread by mixing groups together. Many of the students who were repatriated with their families, after their "education," were ostracized, and could not go back to their tribes. There certainly are two sides to this, and I find it a good thing that this stuff is being revealed. Government wielded a lot of power in those days, and I am sure abuse was rampant when it came to treatment of the poor. All one need to do is look up the history of "reform" schools.

So I don't disagree as I have already said, that residential schools were horrible and wrong. Taking children away from their families and communities is inhumane, as is forbidding the use of their language and culture. The point I am making is the MSM and politicians are confabulating the facts regarding the deaths and graves for political gain. If you read the blog post from behind the yellow tape that I attached and the other post on the over reach of the MSM you will see my point. History should be something we learn from, but lets learn from the facts and make sound and rational moves forward, otherwise we find ourselves burning churches which only hurts the communities that they serve now.

I think one of the current problems with our societies is instead of learning from history and deciding to NOT repeat mistakes of the past, some think we can correct past mistakes. We can't. The people that suffered around the world from past injustices can never have that suffering reversed.

Seems here in the US some also want descendants of those who might have had a hand in past suffering are supposed to make reparations to the descendants of that injustice. Problem with that is it is simply a NEW injustice on those who had no part in the past injustice. And there is no way to define who should pay or receive. Instead of putting past wrongs to bed it creates new animosities and further divides us all.

I am under no delusions regarding how the world works. The powerful have always run roughshod over the weak. Cultures are destroyed by stronger cultures. I wish we would all recognize that we aren't doing it in north America now. I think this is the best we can do and should celebrate that.

I just saw in our regional news that a neighboring county dropped the civil service exam fee for anyone signing up for the police tests, because they are extremely short of people on the list.....

Yes, incredibly sad story. That's my old division but I had moved on before he arrived. I think I had dealt with him on a very few occasions though. Everything I'm hearing about him is that he was a real gentleman and excellent copper. Yes, one in custody at the scene and charged with first degree murder.

I didn't know her well, but I knew her. I met her years and years ago at a Capoeira event (…Brazilian martial art) and had no idea that she had gone on to become a police officer. It's tragic that her life ended in a flash.

I'm sorry - I cannot imagine the myriad of thoughts you had/have upon hearing of this and subsequently.

While I'm glad they caught the shithead who did this, it can't replace the life and the loss of virtues extolled there by that gent, taken away so.

Heavens, another one - I'm sorry to hear of this news @Sedan_clan
