Wow, that fence along the trail down there really gives you a sense of scale. Awesome shot.

My gear list for the trip so far (that I own):
- nikon d610
- nikon 20mm F2.8 prime
- sigma 50mm 1.4 prime. I am not sure about this one yet. I am likely renting a 24-70 so may leave it (it's big and heavy but one of the best 50mm out there)
- 10 stop variable ND, 0.6 GND, and a polarizer
- intervalometer and I just ordered this tripod

I recently went full frame and do not have a lot of lenses so I will be renting. I am 99% sure I will be taking a nikon 24-70mm f2.8G and I am considering bringing a 24mm f/3.5D PC-E (tilt shift) as well.

Maybe a 70-200 f2, but those are so heavy and a little long for most landscapes. Trying to pack as light as possible. 20mm prime, 24-70mm would cover 90% of the shots I would likely be taking. 70-200 would cover the rest?

I would say that you've got it covered. I declined taking my 70-200 2.8 due to the weight and I didn't regret the decision. I did regret not taking my Zeiss 21 2.8, again a concession to weight. After reviewing the "Rule of 600" (http://photo.stackexchange.com/quest...trophotography) I elected to go with a 17-40 4.0 for the wider viewing angle and lighter weight. If I had a "do over" I would have taken the Zeiss. I used a 24-105 4.0 the most. We were warned that the domestic carrier frequently weighed carry-on luggage and we wanted to avoid any issues.

If I remember correctly you should have a good combination of weather and Northern Light activity at that time of year. One other suggestion, take along a pair of rain pants. Even if it's not raining they are a huge help in stopping the wind...and there will be wind! Have a great trip and we'll be looking for the results of your efforts.

Forgiven...

Why'd you correct color balance on one and not the other? (See, there's your penalty for posting two at once. )

Wow, this is just like home...I'm never right! Mark had mentioned the cold and I rushed the pic of my bride to reinforce the sense of cold. I'll consider myself spanked for my lack of attention to detail.

We are still waiting for winter here. Mid 60's today and one of the driest years on record. Some of the marshes I usually set up at and get great duck shots are dry as a bone, which is why I made the 90 minute drive up to the NWR this past Sunday.

I really could have used a wide lens for this and it would have been more dramatic. The noise when they do these mass lift-offs is pretty amazing.

Anyone having export trouble with LR 5.3? My exports seem to come out much softer compared to when viewing them in the develop module, seems to be a bug.

I can do a search; likely I've seen them but I haven't made the connection with the name.

Oh man... he got so close that you clipped the wings. I hate when that happens. (Happens to me. They're either too far or too close). When this happens to me, I'll often crop even tighter to make it seem intentional and show more head/body detail. Just a thought.

Yeah, I was ready for him to bolt, just not right at me!
I actually only clipped one of his wings, but evened it up in post. I will probably play with it some more as I don't like the tone of the sky either.

Yes indeed, that is a bright blue sky. I'd try a square crop and then go with a little darker blue for the sky.

Flying directly at you is the very hardest situation to retain focus. Well done.

Thanks! I love the Iceland pictures as well. The last time I was there I was in a C-17 and never left the airfield

Does anyone have any idea what these birds are? They looked like little statues, never moving, and there were hundreds along the river bank.

I looked at them in the Original size image at Flickr and still couldn't ID them. Geotag the image and describe the location in the description and then post it to the "Bird Identification" Group at Flickr. Based on behavior, local and time of year, someone will give you a pretty firm ID.

^^^Cool shot, DC. The moon looked huge as it was rising last night. Of course I didn't have my camera with me...

Gary88, the B&W picture of Shannon is very nice. You caught tones of gradients in her hair and nice pose with a very pleasant face. I bet she loves it.
