Not really. Old people and those with terminal conditions sometimes plan and pre-pay for their own funerals, buy their cemetery plots, and even their headstones while they are still alive. That way, they feel that their passing will not be a burden to their surviving family. Plus, it's a hedge against future price increases when they pre-pay.

I was executor of an estate where the person did the whole pre-plan thing right down to the flower colors and types.....

Besides what's already mentioned, this should be also useful when you want the mourners to cry (over the expenses): a special/customized procedure, a fancy casket "you always wanted".

What made me think was the "immediate cremation" service: they should request some official certificate of death rather than just offer "drop it and forget it, 24/7".
