im only a year into my 2 year contract and i was able to reserve my iphone 4 for $199. I also currently have the 3gs so you would have no problem with getting the new 4

It's very simple:

If....
Contract ends in 2010 = Pay regular price ($200 for 16gb / $300 for 32gb)
Contract ends in 2011 = Pay $200 more ($400/$500)
Buy out right = $599/$699 out the door

If you're paying for a high phone plan, you may be able to bargain them to waive the extra fees if you aren't eligible for the 2010 price.

Well I upgraded my contract September 2009 for the 3gs so my contract will be up September 2011. Now I just did it again for the Iphone 4 and was eligible for the $199 price and its no where near September 2011. I know a girl who got her 3gs a month before me and isnt eligible till August 2011. Its pretty confusing. I dont know how at&t is deciding whos eligible and whos not.

mine ends july 9 2010 and im not?.. i have a BB data plan tho and on a Premier account

ATT contract end dates are largely based on how much you pay them per month, and how long you have been a customer. The longer you've been with them and the more you pay each month, the sooner your contract ends. It is indeed very confusing, but there's some unverifiable maths at work behind the scenes.

I figured that was the case, since I can't make any sense of the upgrade dates for the 5 lines on my plan. I've got 2 available this year, so I'm really thinking of upgrading both the wife's 3G and my 3GS. Heck, I might even be able to sell these and come out even.....

I was finally able to get a live body on the phone at Apple to inquire about my "double order."

The CS agent tells me "Well, you seem to have ordered two phones."

Me: "No sir, I only ordered one."

CS: "Well, then we should cancel one, which one do you want to cancel?"

Me: "I don't care, as long as I get ONE phone."

Me: "Are they both scheduled to ship on the same date?"

CS: "Yes."

Me: "Then pick one to cancel, I don't care."

CS: "I'll cancel the second one."

Yadda, yadda. In retrospect, I should have let them ship me two phones at $299 each and sell the second one. Dammit.
