The first time the tech took the car out on his lunch hour. Believe it or not I had a feeling and went home and got my other car and drove back to the dealer and parked a bit away and watched the tech service the car. Then he lowered it and drove it out and parked it. Then I saw the techs break for lunch. Left. That's when the tech took my car out. He drove it 2 miles. I was able with the trip log determine his route. At every stop sign the were two long black tire marks. The reach reached speeds of 90mph in 35mph zones. Oh, I became suspicious when I went to pick up the car and smelled hot clutch. And the low fuel warning light was on. Something similar happened at the dealer where I bought the car. Long story short after this time I traded in the car for a new 2008 Porsche Cayman S. My only consolation was both the Chevy dealer and the Pontiac dealer went out of business. Been up to me I would have nuked both dealers from orbit. Only way to be sure... |

Sales manager said unfortunately my M2 is not on that truck. He does expect the car to arrive by April 11. He went on to say BMW says no sales until (or after) April 15. Well, no delivery before April 15. But it is possible for a dealer to sell a car even deliver a car before April 15 but simply not report it to BMW. This runs a bit of a risk if for example BMW issues a recall. As for miles he said it is quite common for M vehicles -- he specifically mentioned M3/M4 vehicles -- get test driven to fine tune the suspension settings. He said for an M car to arrive at the dealer with 30 to 40 miles is not uncommon. Certainly 70 miles is more than 30/40 miles but still within the ballpark. (My WAG: Could just require a bit more work to properly sort the suspension settings.) As for the car when it arrives at the dealer he told me it receives a PDI, then the tech will drive the car after the PDI for around 1/2 mile. But nothing harsh. Just a 1/2 or so mile down and back a surface street at 40mph. After it goes to the showroom. No test rides or drives. Got to say so far this KC BMW dealer -- BMW of Kansas City South -- is being quite professional and so far is a real pleasure to do business with. After I get the car I'm looking forward to putting a glowing positive review in the Dealership buying experience -- The Good, Bad, Ugly thread. |

Seats are crazy comfortable. Driving position is amazing. Clutch feels great, mid/high friction point. Haven't blasted the sound system yet but leaving dealer soon.

Doesn't all have to be suspension. Engine, transmission, other critical systems, and of course the all important electrical system from battery/alternator and on down. It is believable there is some desire by BMW to ensure an M car when it arrives at the dealership is sorted. Best to do this by people who have experienced a number of new cars and can recognize a problem right away. And have the means to get any (reasonable) problem resolved. Might add other car companies should consider doing something similar. Been a number of posts on other car forums of a person taking delivery of a brand new vehicle (and one at (or even above) the M2 price) and experiencing issues sometimes within just a few miles after leaving the dealer with the new car. |

All the proper adjustments are made prior to the car rolling off the line. Any additional adjustments are made in QC and those are generally cosmetic. It is not a dyno test. It is a general test of various functions under the vehicles own power, including the lights and horn. |

My brother owns 6 new car dealerships in the DC market and I worked for him when he was starting out. A couple trucks roll in and the techs just want to QC as quick as possible, not spend 30 - 40 minutes driving them around, I think the book on QC compensation would make that a losing proposition. Someone posted that DX's are done by the GM, GSM or SM who goes on a Sunday drive to exchange vehicles. I can tell you that's not the way I remember it being done, salespeople did their own DX or a couple of retiree runners did them. |
