All of this higher torque talk is bringing back PTSD from my 2019 RWD M240i. Running stage 2 with a little ethanol I was seeing 470 to 480 ft lbs at the wheels and traction was never that great. I had the car fitted with the M Perf LSD with wider and stickier tires. The XHP trans tune with torque limits by gear made the car much more manageable.
I honestly went into the G87 test drive expecting the car to behave similarly given its 400+ ft lbs and RWD as that's what I was used to with my F series M240i. I was super wrong and even with summer tires in 55 degree Fahrenheit weather the car held the road well. The power delivery is so much more civilized and balanced vs the single turbo torque blast from the B58. If it hadn't been for that test drive I'm not sure I'd be getting the G87.

M2 does launch in 1st unlike its big brothers M3/4. So my assumption is although power bump if not until M3/4C power level they would probably still be able to launch just fine in 1st.

Motor Trend got the '23 M240i x-drive 0-60 in 4.0 sec, while they got the '23 M2 auto 0-60 in 3.6 sec and manual in 3.8 sec. Fair to say the rwd M240i would be slower than than the x-drive version, no?

Adding more torque will probably not result in better 0-60 but that's only one aspect of the driving experience. More torque seems always a good idea to me.

I read the same comments all the time about the Corvette on Corvette forums. My Z06 has 595 whp and is a 6-speed manual. Without using launch control I can launch it in 1st gear with almost no wheel spin and hit 0-60 in 2.7-2.9 pretty consistently. I also don't spin going into 2nd or third. Yet if you believed what you read online, most people complain about spinning a standard Z06 (440 whp) up to 4th gear. I'm not even a "good" performance driver by any stretch, but I have learned how my cars behave. Still getting use to the G87 with only 900 miles under my belt, I'm much more confident in my Z06 with ~125 more whp.

Looking forward to seeing the car in some decent colours (not in frozen finish’ hopefully). Couldn’t give a rats arse about a few more hp.

Ah there it is. You're 100% right, I keep forgetting the M2 comes with the manual by default. Thanks for the correction

Gents, why the hell are you arguing about the 0-60 of the M2 vs M240? Let’s be real, the results from C&D are from perfect conditions after repeated tests. Yes, you ‘might’ be faster in the M2, but 9 times out of 10 anyone in a quick auto AWD car is going to out-launch a RWD car, especially one that is a manual, especially if the weather/surface isn’t perfect.
Either way, who the hell cares? If you care about 0-60, go and buy an EV. My Tesla absolutely spanks my M2 from a dig, but I don’t care. The M2 is a track weapon and I love driving the pants off it. |

I must admit I saw it on the front page and clicked with interest. Skipped to the end and saw people arguing about 0-60 for a ‘purist’ RWD car and thought ‘wtf is wrong with people’. We all supposedly want the M2 to remain the ‘real’ M car and everyone’s arguing about 0-60. Can’t we just leave this ONE car out of the 0-60 chat. Go buy an M3 xDrive, bloody CarWow fan girls
