For anyone planning on ordering the skid plate for the oil cooler, it's now on sale for $390 and mine shipped same day directly from Turner. It's expected to arrive tomorrow (OH to NJ).

I wanted to provide an update on the status of my car. Unfortunately, it's not good news. The oil cooler needs to be replaced, which is going to cost $1500. Even worse though, the engine may be shot too due to how much oil it lost, but they won't know this until after they replace the cooler. Of course, BMW is denying warranty coverage, since it was caused by an external factor. I'm currently filing a claim with my car insurance company so fingers crossed they will cover everything.
Those of you getting the cover are very wise. I wish I had the foresight to do that long ago. |

It's a cosmetic mod, I'm not sure why he chimed in with that as if it was helpful. The vendor claims it will prevent leaves and other debris from getting into the front bumper/coolers, which is true I guess, but it's not what is being discussed in this thread. |

The SS mesh came in today and it looks great. I'm hoping the skid plate comes tomorrow but I think Monday/Tuesday is more likely

was thinking about doing something like reachimg out to BMW NA about this, but didn't know if it would be worth my time and energy. It would be good to know if others on this forum have experienced something similar as there is strength in numbers and then I could also let bmw know I am aware of at least x number of people who have had this same issue, which means what happened to me wasn't just an anomoly.

If your insurance covers it, which it should, you should be fine from a financial perspective once you pay your comp deductible. I would communicate the issue the BMW NA regardless. They should compensate the cost of repairs or at least your inconvenience. And ultimately fix the problem which seems so simple it's unreal that the problem exists in the first place.

That's interesting and you make a good point. I'll have to ask them for more clarity on this and why they think it should fall under collision and not comp.

Collision is colliding with an object. Another example you can throw at them is the windshield scenario, which is always from a rock kicked up by another vehicle and hitting the windshield and cracking it. Similar scenario here except it was an oil cooler and it's unknown where the rock came from.

I'd make your insurer aware of the issue and show them what the underside of the M240i looks like. Maybe the insurer will cover it but try to subrogate (get compensated for) from BMW NA due to the circumstances/negligence. It's probably a $35K+ claim, assuming you get a new motor.

I doubt it, the market value of the car is likely way more than the cost to replace the motor...but maybe after factoring in labor by the dealer, who knows. If you have new car replacement coverage, it makes the odds of totalling even less likely since they will value the car at MSRP instead of the current market value of a 2022/2023 used car.

Agreed, the design is laughable, and it goes across many of BMW's chassis. Kies Motorsports did a video installing a Turner skid plate on an F80/F82 for the exact same issue on the G42. The F80/F82 cooler at least comes with a little protection from the factory. |

I'm not too worried about rocks since it this skid plate has deflectors, could it happen, sure but I need the air flow since I track this car. You are giving up air flow with is skid plat, but I would like some protection. However, those who use the screen mesh please post pictures and how you installed it.
