Which would be feel the special car as a weekend car? Opinions please? Just looking to use for short weekend rides with the Mrs, and two kids in the back aged 6 & 11. Want it to feel special...

Which one would you go for??
If the 992 is a good price id get it.
500 lbs lighter, less plastic interior bits, larger fuel tank.
GT silver all day.
If you like to mod your cars, you might get bored with it.
The M2 is a mod’ers paradise.

Something doesn’t make sense. Of course, there are a plethora of reasons… but the main reason in my theoretical analysis is because people don’t want to lose money.

But the real reason is actually because it’s a status symbol and not a drivers car, and the idea of owning a 911 is more attractive than driving it. I know guys who that is the exact opposite of their truth, but for the vast majority I think this is a bucket list item instead of an opportunity to drive the car.

And in my same theoretical analysis the secondary reason is lack of driving comfort. I can spend 8 hours in my M and be fine. It’s like when I talk to guys with GT4’s - they can’t stand more than a couple hours in the car.

Regardless I’ll keep dreaming of a 911. Prices are coming down. For real this time. Or maybe not…
It's because for most with sports cars, the sports car is a 2nd, 3rd, 4th vehicle. My inferno Orange Carbon Z06 is my dream car, I wanted it since it was unveiled in 2010. They only made 85 of them, so it took me years (10) years to find one. The one I found was also an even rarer version that was sent to Callaway Cars. Only 3 in existence. I never plan to sell this car, but I put less than 1000 mi/year on it. It's low, loud, not as easy to get in/out, have to worry about damage (parts are scarce), etc. It's an absolute awesome car to drive, but not something I would drive all the time.

I mean, my M3 is my third car. My buddy’s GTS is his fourth car. But we still drive them! I don’t think this is the driving force, pun intended. The other things you mentioned, yes, but the 911 is more refined…

One of the things I discovered is that some people buying these cars have stupid money and own 10-20+ cars or take a car waiting on a car to be built. There is the resale factor but it’s not that bad if you drive your car. I owned my 2021 Targa 4S, drove it almost 15,000 miles over 27 months and sold it for what I paid. So you can drive certain Porsches and not lose a lot of money. Obviously I paid taxes, insurance, gas and had to replace the rear tires at 14,000 miles

Nice. And totally agree. I just don’t think there are hundreds of people like this within 50 miles of me. seriously the number of 992 T’s with 500 miles is crazy. There could be a justifiable reason, such as the car didn’t meet expectations. There’s a guy on YouTube I follow who didn’t like his T and repurchased the 991.2 that he sold to a neighbor.

Of course you also had impeccable timing. I don’t lose money on our Q7 or Tesla during that time period either.

The 992 S or T would be double the price of the M2. Is it worth it to you? It would definitely feel more special. But then, the price…
I’d kill for a 992 T. Does that help?

Porsche is the better vehicle. M2 is the better compromise. It comes down to budget. A 911 isn’t cheap in any year or trim. If you can swing it, it will be worth it, but if you’re stretching to get there the M2 will be way more fun.

You would be surprised about them hiding in your midst unless you’re in a large townhome or apartment development. But if you drive by and see a home with a garage or a non descript farm, possibilities are they have some luxury cars. Also, a lot of these people are not in the forums so don’t really flaunt or advertise their cars. I ran into a guy with a 992T and complimented his car and he seemed kind of “what, who me?” Maybe he was messing with me.

True, but even some guys with a base Carrera barely put miles on them. I don't know...don't say "they are meant to be driven" if you don't plan on driving them.

Everyone says Z06s are meant to be driven on the track, yet 0.0000001% of owners do that. I don't get caught up with what people say

MY19 was the last year of the 991, right? So OP, I looked at Autotrader nationwide for a 2020 992 S, and the prices range from $105k-$145k. The lowest priced mileage is 40k+. Median seems to be about $130k and 15k miles. Same on BAT incl $5k fee, although smaller sample size. Manuals and verts command higher prices, as usual.

Yeah, the equivalent price here in the states would be a 2014-2015 991 S with 40k miles.

How is it so much less of a delta in the UK?

Or Op are you getting friends and family deal?

You are right on this one. But in the UK, I can get a brand new MY25 M2 with carbon roof and in a nice colour and a couple of small options for around £71k. BUT I can also pick up a used 2019 992 S with fairly basic options in a standard non-special colour with around 15k miles on the clock for around £80k, so we are talking roughly around £9k-£10k difference.

A hard decision to make...hmmmm.

Yes I do love to project mod, but as im getting older I feel like I may leave the car stock, depending on which one I get.

My last Porsche was a 2003 996 Turbo, which I bought used in June 2009 (with just under 10K miles) and drove to Dec. 2017. So I drove it 8 years and put a bit over 150K miles on the car.

An awesome car. It alternated with my Boxster as my daily driver (60 mile per day work commute) and as my road trip car.

Very comfortable car. Around town or on the highway or on mountain roads that were very conveniently located to me while I lived in northern CA.

But oh the running costs... Gas mileage wasn't that much worse than the Boxster, but everything else cost more money.

Rear seats were useless for passengers but I seldom even had a passenger in the car with me let alone more than 1 passenger.

If there was a good Porsche dealer in my area I'd probably have a Porsche. Probably a Cayman S but I'm not current on Porsche models and I might opt for a modern 911.

But I really enjoy my 2023 M2. It is not a Porsche but it is a very nice car and I don't feel I'm missing out any by having the M2 and no Porsche.

with all due respect to the G87, i don't think there is any question as to which car will be more special, more of an occasion to drive

as to the economics

the 992 has a higher price but will depreciate at much lower rate than the G87 will

however, if it's not CPO, the warranty is up, and even if it is CPO, it will soon be up
so with the 992 you have to factor in higher maintenance costs, if something does break on it it won't be cheap, plus the consumables are all worn vs a brand new G87 with warranty and new consumables

ultimately the 992 is the riskier financial proposition, but maybe the fizz it will bring is worth it?

as someone else noted go drive em both and you will know
