I’m merely pointing out there is no benefit to ordering a ‘stripper’ car. This isn’t an E92 M3 where you get a single hump non idrive car for example. If you ever sell it, it’s also not going to be more desirable (in fact it will be less desirable) in the used market. Thing like the adaptive LED lights, HUD, heated wheel etc. are all nice quality if life options that have no real penalty.

Datapoint: The '24 I am waiting for was a dealer ordered car with only the lighting package, the shadowline package (the former requires the latter), and a heated steering wheel. About $1k in total, so pretty minimal. Based on my extensive searching, minimalistic builds like this do appear to be rarer, with most having a few more options.

i tried to come up with a counterpoint based on the cost of adaptive lights vs the standard but theres only a $300 difference right now per headlight in parts costs so thats a totally moot point.

the only options you can probably check that would adversely affect the price of the car down the road is color choice and transmission choice. everything else is likely to add to resale price or desirability.

For sure, really no reason not to get the shadowline adaptive lights. Cars with the carbon roof will be more desirable in future. Carbon roof or slicktop cars are always more in demand with enthusiasts. If you look at the E92 M3 market for example, a clean carbon roof car is worth $10k more, sells much quicker and generally will have a way bigger buyer pool. Outside of that it’s players choice to a degree, but an individual manual full carbon (roof, seats) will be top of the tree.

100% agreed on the last point- any of the 4 indy colors with carbon buckets will be the easiest sell with the highest resale. i think in order of magnitude, the options with the greatest affect on resale will be:

-indy color
-transmission choice
-carbon buckets
-carbon roof
-carbon trim

thats likely it. the rest (interior color choice, ACC, HUD, caliper color etc) will probably amount to a "huh, thats neat" once the above boxes are checked for used buyers.

I’m interested if anyone has had success ordering a stripper M2, and if so, where?
In California a $5k non refundable deposit isn't a thing. They can ask for $5k but in California all deposits are refundable

Dealers like to claim that to scare folks. How do I know. I went down this road during an EV purchase during 2022/2023 when the rules changed and a non refundable deposit was "required" to make sure you go the EV credit.

Under California code it is not legally binding if a dealer wants a non refundable deposit. If you buy a car in California; until you drive it off the lot, you can still cancel the deal with no financial penalty.

I came from Porsche where they really get you for every option. The cost of all the possible options on the M2 seemed like an incredible deal to me so I loaded up baby. Got everything except that silly inductive charging thing and no heated steering wheel...that also seemed silly.

The dealer tried to get me to bite on the heated steering wheel and not having that was going to be a re-sell killer. I was having none of that.

Besides I plan on running this thing into the ground anyway. I'm already approaching 2K miles.

A few years ago i ordered a base 718 Cayman with no options. Dealer pushed me to get some options but I stuck to the stripper build. I sold the car to Carvana a year later and only had $1K in depreciation. Likely would have had much more depreciation had it had options.

People were hoarding toilet paper back then too lol. Tommy Lee Jones quote in Men in Black is accurate…people are dumb, panicky dangerous animals. Some of the things people do is mind-boggling.

Lol this am we parked next to a spotless 23 black base cayman at the dog park (we were taking our dog (son) for a walk, and I asked my wife one last time “can you handle it if I buy a cayman?” She said it’s so ugly she can’t even look at it. Funny enough there was an i3 parked as well “that’s cute, what is it?”
Sigh. Looks like M2 it is

«They will do what they’re told!» - Conor McGregor )

On a serious note, dealers aren’t in favor of bare bones spec for any model if you pull out/they’re stuck with it. Larger deposit should offset the risk.

as has been mentioned, they don't want to get stuck with a base car should you back out, which by the sounds of it, has a good chance of happening. Can't say I blame them for asking for the deposit even if legally they'll have to give it back.

I'd want a sunroof, makes the car more fun. It's already a very heavy car, the carbon roof is pointless besides looks. 6MT and sunroof for me.

Now I wait for the Stripper

FYI, it was $1K down, MSRP, no "add-ons".
