Friction is independent of surface area of a solid material (as long as the material doesn’t deform or lose integrity), so the clamping force and consequent total friction force will be the same. Basically half the area and twice the pressure on that area leads to the same friction.

Shocked no one’s mentioned anything about scrub radius.

Spacers increase it. It’s not necessary a good thing. Most will notice the steering feels heavier after installing spacers.

I run spacers. But there are drawbacks to it. A couple positives too. But it’s not ideal.

Like I said in an earlier post, anything inside of like 25mm you're not significantly affecting the scrub radius

The discussion on scrub radius really comes into play when you are changing both the offset and wheel width by large amounts.
