See post #14 for size comparison, the aluminum and CF are essentially same size, a bit shorter than stock. + it takes away the “give” of leather = solid shift.

Me too, but the Alcantara held up fine on my F87 and I had the same knob (forgot to swap it out). Granted that car was close to 6 years old but only had 20k when I sold it. Just do normal wipe down once in awhile.

Not hard, takes a bit of patience. I usually put the shifter in 2nd, release the bottom frame of the boot from the console, sit back and pull straight up.

The knob is secured to the shaft by a built-in press-fit plastic collar, the bottom of the knob itself has 2 plastic rectangular posts and 1 clip, the plastic post are fitted to the boot and the factory uses plastic weld or adhesive. Need to clean the excess adhesive/plastic from the underside of the boot to free the existing knob.

Then fit the replacement knob over the boot collar, line it up and tap the knob home, the channel at the top of the shifter mates to an index piece inside the knob so it won't twist.

You can also put some adhesive over the part where the factory plastic weld the 2 rectangular posts, that's optional. Once fitted, the boot and knob will not separate.

I got the knobs from https://www.genuinebmwminiparts.com/. They are the cheapest for now. The aluminum/alcantara one is 25110429269
and the dry carbon/alcantara is 25112222534. The latter is more $ because it comes attached to a boot for the F series.

Added pix to show the underside of the knob with 2 rectangular posts + 1 clip. The aluminum/alcantara one doesn't have those 2 posts, maybe an older design.

How heavy is the M performance knob as compared to the OEM version. I really dislike the feel of the OEM knob, it feels like a plastic toy in my hand. On top of that, it has a little bit of play...

I can tell you the stock knob is heavier than either of the replacement, felt that the first time I removed the one from my F87.

Once mounted, either of the MP knobs provide a more solid shifting feel because the materials doesn't have any "give", and the weight has very little to do with the feel in my case, it's the slightly reduced height of the the replacement knobs that's important.

On the F87, it was a leap of faith that the smaller/shorter knob would help (I didn't like the other after-market attachment points), plus the dry carbon matched my interior much better, and it paid off.

Thanks, I ordered the aluminum version. I would have paid extra for the CF one but since it is open-pore, it doesn't match my high-gloss CF trim.

Good luck. I did the aluminum first because 1. I didn't have it before, and 2. it was quite a bit cheaper. But after using it, I didn't care too much for the temperature sensitivity. While it doesn't get that cold in SoCal but I was concerned about the summer heat. I have that problem with the aluminum shifter on a 4Runner, which is not too bad since I wouldn't be shifting as much as on a 6MT.

BTW, the dry carbon also doesn't match the other CF pieces since there was no choice in the G whereas the F did. Can't have it all I suppose.

This looks awesome. So basically the boot doesn’t fit the same as the f87 and for the carbon/alc one but only comes thst way ??? Would
You say the CF texture and finish matches well enough off the new knob and what is in the interior for the g87???? Thanks for posting all the info on here im just about to order even with not be able to use the boot for anything ….

I really liked the F87 shifter and ordered the kit... It came with a boot and found out the boot does not fit the G87.. So I had the installer fabricate a new Alcantara boot from the same fabric grade to match the M-P arm rest and he was able to apply the BMW tri-color stitching... came out pretty good... The F87 shifter is a little smaller than the stock unit but I got use to it pretty quick....

40 Cylinders That looks great, I will probably give the repurpose boot a shot, though I would have to use the plastic frame from the original unit. I actually got 2 boots left over, the one I got for the F and the one for G now.

I am no expert in CF so can't really comment, I am sure the pattern could have variances between the dry & wet ones. I personally never care for the wet finish because it's so overdone in so many ways, some great and some not so. BUT, no matter how well they're manufactured, the clear coat will eventually turn yellow and/or crack. That's why I opted for the dry on the F, unfortunately, no such option on the G.

I think the purist will tell you the weaves are different, but then, a purist would also tell you the MP knob is not correct for the G.

In a previous thread a pic showed the new shifter boot... well I had to purchase x amount of alcantara and it was a bunch ... enough to cover the back of the front seats... again BMW tri-color stitching along with the C/F Autoid head rest item....

I got the aluminum knob installed, and I love it! It is few grams lighter than the stock indeed, but it feels so much better in the hand and the shits are so much more precise.

As far as the install goes, it took 10 minutes but I did break the tabs on the stock knob.
