E92 also has hydraulic steering. I miss that so damn much.
What's wild is I barely noticed the difference anymore, that's how good the electronic steering has become.

What are you comparing it to? Every modern F and G series BMW I've driven with EPS pale in comparison to their older hydraulic counterparts. It's a night and day difference to me.

22 M340 is pretty heavy in sport mode. I also didn't make any adjustments in the E93 M3.

Is the ZF8 used in the G80 M3 the same one that is used in the '22 X3 M40i? The reason I ask is because I've only ever used the ZF8 in our X3, and although it does shift quick between gears, there is still a noticeable lag to me when flicking the paddles manually. The lag isn't much, and I'd estimate it to be only around 100ms or less, but I could tell it is there. For instance when flooring it and shifting the paddle manually at higher revs, it won't actually shift until a few hundred RPM after I pull the paddle (ie: 5200 vs 5000 where I pulled the paddle). Now I haven't actually measured the delay or revs in any scientific way, but this is how it feels to me and is what I'd guess if asked to explain it.

Car journalists all seem to gush over the ZF8 and its "fast" gear changes, but don't really talk about the paddle delay. Yes, the gear changes are quick as it shifts gears, but the paddle delay kills it for me. I'm curious if anyone that has used the ZF8 in the G80 series car could comment.

For reference, I'm comparing the feel to the PDK in my 991.2 GT3 RS, which I know isn't a fair comparison, but is the only other "automatic" I have currently to compare with (besides the X3). In that car, it feels as if the gear change happens before I even completely finish pulling the paddle.

I will definitely be sticking with manual in the G87 M2, if the ZF8 is anything like I've experienced so far.

The electronic tune in the ZF on M cars is vastly superior to the other models, however it is true that there is still an unwanted lag if you compare it to the previous gen of M cars with the DCT (and especially to a GT3RS with PDK lol). Apparently the transmissions can be further tuned to make them even faster, so I guess we are to see what that entails.

0 question 6MT for me. It'll be the last M car with ICE and MT, so it's truly the end of the road for me. If for some reason, there's a supply chain issue like there is for MINI and they can't produce cars with manual, I'd skip this car completely.

If I do go for G87, it'd be the base version with carbon buckets and an MP wing. That's all I'd want

The bolded is also my belief and why, at the end of the day, I'm going to go MT. I think there's a good chance this is the last fully ICE manual M car.

The manual will be more desirable at the time of resale. FYI, Any Porsche right now with a manual adds 10+%.

Me too… but I am the complete opposite, it is manual only or nothing.

After driving manual cars for 17 years straight in ridiculous LA traffic, I finally had enough and got my M2C in DCT. Now I miss manual more than ever, haha. So it is manual for me and I'll probably add an auto daily driver.

Another reason I'm getting a manual...the fear of being bored of the auto. Don't think one could get bored of the manual.

Oh no sorry to hear would you still get the g87 if you still had your f87? I'm wondering if it would be redundant to have both.

Much appreciated, means a lot dude. Yep I was planning on it; maybe one day I'll get an F87 CS, but we'll see. Might be redundant at that point honestly haha

Yeah if I reflect on my journey with the cars that spawned my username (HEMI), I started with a manual Challenger R/T, then had a bunch of automatics, tried telling myself I liked it, and ended up back in a manual 392 car as my last Challenger before jumping to BMW. It was like a big sigh of relief.

I'm def doing manual, even if it's "base only," in the G87.

Thanks for the sanity check.

Maybe down the line I'll be in a position to add an LCI auto to have both.

Likewise, plus the manual will be highly more desirable 10, 15, 20 plus years down the road. If you intend to keep it at length that is something to consider.

A small RWD car with a powerful engine deserves to be enjoyed. This car is an awesome daily and needs to have a stick, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Make it an occasion every time you get in. You're not going to care if you get to the grocery store at 5:15:30 PM or 5:15:45 PM, it's irrelevant. What you will care is how much you're enjoying the drive, can't get that with an automatic transmission.

I am on the wait list, and want to go with 6MT. But ... let's just hope that they put an improved 6MT in the G87.

I've driven 2 G80 M4s with the manual, and it's a massive step backwards from my OG F87 6MT. Sloppy and rubbery with what feels like a longer clutch takeup. Very disappointing. The CTV-4 Blackwing's manual is lightyears better. But hopefully they will make some improvements.

Hey BMW .... you listening???

BMW's manuals were never Honda great IMHO and I don't see any reason why the G87's version would be any better than the one you experienced in the G80.
