I'm sure I've posted this before but I'll post it again. Attached is a pic of my 2008 Cayman S oil canister oil and filter at around 750 miles. I didn't cut the filter open but based on the amount of "glitter" visible in the oil in the drain pan I'm sure it had lots of particles of metal/whatever in its folds.... I'll add that the sample of factory fill oil from my 230i and the sample of virgin oil there was no mistaking which was which. The factory fill oil with around 600 miles was considerably darker than the virgin oil. |

From new, I normally do all my cars first at around 1K miles, then every 5K or 6 mos after. 10k interval is not happening. Never seen an oil change warning. Among 3 cars, I usually schedule oil changes in May and November. PITA to get them all in, but peace of mind. Oil is cheap; engines are not.

What's everyone using as far as oil brand and weight?

Ditto, used a BMW filter as well. Did my first change at 1k miles, plan to change again at 5k miles and every 5k thereafter. The car will probably get ~5-6k miles per year, so that's only one oil change per year. It's one of the easiest/fastest oil changes I've ever done as well. Is it overkill? Who knows. Is it worth the $85 per year peace of mind? Yes.
