M4 is easily 4 adults as long as not too many are 6'2 plus.

Back of the new G series 2 is quite a different proposition from the F series. I had a 235i and M2 (same size of course) and it was zero compromise for a family of 4.

I'm not so sure this time around.
Are you saying that the G87 would not be suitable for a family of four? Myself and my wife have two young children, 5 & 9 years old and hoping the keep the car for around 8 years.
I have a G42 and two daughters, ages 6 and 10. My wife is 5'3". We all fit SNUGLY. Six year old behind me and 10 year old behind her. If you want no compromises, then I advise a 3 series. I highly doubt the G87 has more room than the G42.

I'd say you're in 'peak' coupe family size, they're not tall teenagers yet and also don't need car seats and buckles sorting out by you.

I'd say all good go for it but if possible check a G42 to see the space.
I am 6 feet and was able to sit in the rear of my F87 M2 and past M235i totally fine for 3+ hour ride.

I can't sit in the rear of a G42 without my head touching the ceiling/window and my legs need to be on the side of the seat or cramped on one side. It doesn't look like it when you read the specs but there's a big difference with the past F series. It's particularly turned me a bit off.

I hope Bmw has done something better this time, although the ID8 is a deal breaker for me.
To me is not a deal breaker .... it's just one thing that aparts the car from perfection....... I am positive that they will do something on the g87 LCI and will make a legend to collect

It's true the back seat is fine even smaller but I just don't like regression, like removing perfectly working physical buttons and add steps to a one step process.

The back seats of the F87 were very useful, making them smaller doesn't add anything to the package, the car isn't even ligther.. But I agree as a sporty 2 door couper they are ok.

Not sure why. It's a core feature of the car and the reason many select it over the cayman and other 2 seaters.

Having back seats is definitely valuable...for being able to throw your bag in and etc. It's just not designed to seat adults.

Lol that is the way I look at it too. The bag I bring to work and maybe a couple of grocery bags but that is it.

For older kids/teenagers you may have to get M3. My plan is to get a second car for kids. I went from M2 to 3, and now will be going back to 2.

Access to the back seat on the old F22 2 series was fairly quick and easy. Latch on the seat back and it slid forward manually and quickly.
The G42 latch is more awkwardly placed and triggers a very slow power slide forward. Your kid will pee themselves before it moves enough to let them escape. The backseat room and access is definitely a downgrade from the previous generation.
On the upside, there is much better room up front in the G42👍.

That's a damn shame. Definitely a step down from the F87 then.

That said, I'm 6'3" and it has plenty of room in the front with great visibility. I'll take the rear legroom tradeoff for the smaller sports car feel vs stepping up to a full blown sedan.

Maybe on the M2 with the bucket seats you gain a few inches for rear passenger legs, but headroom remains limited.

These are the dimension comparisons between an F87, G42 230i RWD and M240i xDrive. Notice the 230i RWD has more headroom both front and rear compared to an xDrive model. Expect the G87 to have the same headroom since it too is RWD. In fact, the G87 may have slightly more headroom since it won't come standard with a sunroof, but that's still TBD. Rear leg and shoulder room however suffer compared to the F87; no getting around that.

Note: BMW has not published the full interior specs of the 2023 M240i RWD model, so I'm assuming it will be the same as the 230i since it's also RWD. The BMW USA site is also inaccurate as it shows the same interior dimensions for the 230i RWD, 230i xDrive, M240i RWD and M240i xDrive. All G42 specs in the chart below are from this official BMW press release.

What I was surprised about was how wide the G42 is compared to the F87.
Having my car serviced and the tech parked it next to a M240… it almost looked wider, in part because I think is lower and longer.

Pretty dull review. Bottom line: it's a slightly smaller M4

It's definitely got a much longer snout

And the lower kickers stick way out on the G's so it makes them all look wider visually
