The digital gauges have been a huge miss for both ID7, ID8, and now ID8.5/9. I just don’t understand BMWs stupid fucking obsession with non traditional clusters. One of my favorite features about my RS5 was being able to put the digital cockpit in minimalistic/track mode with only a horizontal RPM bar, the speed, and the gear.

Oh yes thanks for the reminder. Driving spiritedly it's in the 180 mile range. Driving somewhat normally on highway maybe 225 miles. Could probably do more in full efficient and not driving funly. But that's no fun.

Yeah, it's a limitation. I'm considering taking mine on a 2000 mile road trip this summer... but I'm not sure I want to gas up every 3-4 hours.

Planning this last road trip was special because of the scarcity of fueling stops.

That said, it did force me to get out and stretch, thus helping with my seat comfort complaints. :P

I have about 3200 miles on mine and I definitely feel your #1. I want my RPM Gauge on my heads up display. Its annoying to have to switch the setting every time you start the car.
My biggest gripe about the equipment is the damn sun visor isn't long enough to cover the entire window when you have it pulled out to the side. I have to angle it back in towards my head to cover the last 1/4 of my door window if the sun is coming at me sideways.

Only have about 250 miles on my car and while I'm liking it so far, I definitely have a couple gripes of my own. I imagine once I'm able to fully open it up these will melt away.

1. Hate to say it but Throttle House was right. This car was designed to be an automatic. In 3rd/4th and low rpm's, the power isn't what it should be.

2. Really missing having physical short cut keys. Having a 2-3 step process every time I want to toggle between different media modes is annoying.

3. My own personal mistake, didn't need to get the HUD. I find myself turning it off at night.

4. Wish the steering was heaver.

5. Fuel tank size sucks. Of course we can't cry about that and want a lighter car.

EDIT -
As a disclosure due to the reaction of my first point: this car has yet to be pushed or be put in "sports plus" and still way below the break-in period so take it with a grain of salt.

We can agree to disagree on number 1.

Agree number 2.

For 3 I agree. I completely turned it off now after being initially impressed by it. I have decided I just don't like HUDs.

After driving just me car the the last 5 days and 2000 miles, I got into my CX50 today and was taken aback at how much heavier its steering is lol.

Yep can't complain about fuel too much.

If you scroll to "Reduced" and select it, that is pretty much all that is shown.

This only makes sense if you say that ANY engine tuned for high-end power is "designed to be an automatic."

And THAT only makes sense if you say that every NA engine, every motorcycle engine, every small displacement inline four banger, has the same problem. Which is frankly absurd.

I dunno man, I don't wanna be dismissive, but maybe choose the right gear? Am I missing something here?

I think the point is that there shouldn't have to be a "right gear".

In a car with 450 horsepower, it should pull harder in third at 2k RPM. I'm coming from a supercharged V6 (6mt) with roughly the same power and that was a bit snappier. That being said, naturally this is going to be an adjustment...and one that I'm sure I'll enjoy.

Side note: I also haven't put the engine in "sport plus" just yet.

Ok, you know what? That's actually a good point. OK, fair, the S58 is totally hobbled if you are staying below 4K for break-in. That makes a LOT more sense. I buy that, but it's a temporary condition.

Any engine will work well with 8 to 10 speeds. Back in the 80s and 90s, an engine optimized for an auto was an engine with a really low torque peak since it would work well with 3-4 forward gears and it needed a wide torque spread to tolerate that.

Nowadays, "needing an auto" really means that "this car drives better when I'm not making decisions about gear ratios".

In the M2, that brief delay you feel when you bury the throttle in 4th at 1500 rpms is the engine rolling its eyes at you... Since the S58 is a German engine, it will briefly complain and then oblige you nonetheless.

If you put my Viper in 4th at 30 mph (engine turning ~1300 rpms) it squats on the initial torque (NA engine after all) and then makes an awful sound that clearly communicates "you don't know what you are doing...do you"? Even this engine doesn't have the "power that it should at 1300 rpm". Later in the drive, the car may try to stab you in the back. Viper's tend not to tolerate shenanigans from their operators.

Even with 8.4 liters of displacement, this engine increases torque output by 50% from 1300 rpms to torque peak at 5000 rpm. This is because it is an engine and not an electric motor.

When you can't keep an engine within its ideal operating range with 6 closely spaced forward gears (and a first gear that tops out at a low 39 mph!) - it's not the cars fault!
