More of the exception to the rule (no deposit). When did you get on the list and what was your dealership's waiting list like?

I, too, put zero down with a large volume dealership in SoCal. I went in with a spec sheet and got an allocation around two weeks later.

No clue how long the list was, I was the first one on it though. Didn't matter, deposits are just dumb and I wouldn't place one anyway as they're going to sell these cars regardless.

I guess we can agree to disagree. Not all dealerships are the same or run the same. Some do a high volume of sales and dont care if you walk away due to asking a reasonable deposit, they will sell their allocations/cars to the next buyer. They run a business to make money, not to get accolades.

Again, not all are the same. Receiving an allocation two qeeks after getting on a list (submitting your order), you sure got lucky. By Jan 2023, my dealership had a list over 25 people and they received 2-4 allocations each month once they started dropping.

I had to put a similar deposit down. Once they confirmed the deposit was completely refundable and went towards purchase didn’t see it as an issue. Especially since you likely aren’t waiting a year for a car at this point, and instead just a couple months.

The dealer I worked with took a 2k refundable deposit, but only once the allocation was available and I was submitting my build.

With limited allocations it seems like a good way to weed out the non serious folks... I would be upset if some with an allocation before me speed something I didn't like then skipped out. That could have been my car!

5k is WAY too much for an M2 deposit
Ferrari asks for 10k on a new 400k 296 GTB

My deposit for m2 was 1000$

A $2k refundable deposit sounds much more inline with what an M car that's worth what the G87 M2 is. $5k does sound a touch on the aggressive side & is a bit much to ask most people upfront.

My X3 M Competition pretty well equipped was around $82k MSRP & I ordered it "per my desired specs" without pitting a single cent down beforehand. They did however run a full credit check before the allocation was fulfilled.

I would definitely deal with a less greedy & money hungry dealership. Some of them think it's okay to play with these pre order semantics because they've done it to a few others before & gotten away with it.

Give the dealerships that are much more willing to do a reasonable pre-purchase deal with you the business of a possible sale. A dealership that seams to value your business before they dig deep into your pockets.

The only vehicle order I've given a deposit for in the last 20+ years was my wife's '23 Grand Cherokee Summit. It was $1k once our order was accepted and a VIN was provided. It was required because our order was at 4% below invoice. I was fine with that. I've ordered many vehicles over the years and prior to the GC, the last deposit I gave was in 1999.

If you're willing to expand your search, these vehicles can be found and/or ordered without a deposit.

On Saturday, I put $5K down at my local BMW dealership.

On Monday, they reached out to me declining to sell me a car.

Asshats!

Sounds like someone offered a bit more to take your allocation. I have heard of that happening unfortunately.

Nope....the Dealer told me I could have a M2 only if I finance or lease...no cash sales.

That was a year ago...now they would beg me to buy one.

Local dealer wanted $3k non-refundable deposit to order our M2. I felt it was high, but they had an available allocation while others with refundables would have been waitlist.

I've always wondered why some dealership require a non-refundable deposit. Are they worried that G87 M2 might take too long to move off the lot... ? They sure do some interesting & creative things when it comes to M cars huh.

might be that they don't want someone to walk in and take one of their few build slots to make a terrible build then abandon it before delivery so the dealer is stuck with a uggo car on the lot. Less of a potential issue with the M2 currently though because there's so few options but you can make some nasty color/option combinations with M3/M3/M5 builds lol

I was thinking that too after my last post was made about this topic & from a seller perspective, that makes sense.
