Look at Lotto (or state lotteries). Infinitesimal chance of winning. Millions of people still play every day. Most would be better off spending the money elsewhere. That's why state sponsored gambling is considered a regressive tax.

What a waste of money man...

It's disappointing to me because I could take that $8k and throw it into a start-up that would take advantage of a niche I see in the e-commerce market and turn it into $100k+ within 2 years easily.

It's also the only thing that can make you jump two social classes.

College and a good job can only get you a one-level jump max. You make a quarter mil a year, so what? You're still middle class. The chances of the average lotto demographic making it to CEO is probably comparable to the chances of winning the jackpot.

But with the lotto, you can jump from poverty to 1%-er. Nothing but a game. $1 for human hope is good bang for the buck. Gambling is muy, muy fun.
