I agree. Thought the f80 sounded a lot better than the e30, up there with the e36, probably behind the e46 and definitely behind the e92. That said it's better on all other fronts to the other cars in my opinion. You'd want it to be given its the current model with the benefit of the combined history and heritage behind it.

The bright side for all the E9X lurkers is that you'll only hear the F8X sound for a second, as it blows right by you. Still, I bet it feels good for you to spew on an active forum, and get away from the E9X M3 mausoleum. Say hi to your President, Ezio.

It's not that the F80 sounds bad. It sounds a lot like the other inline 6 engines, and that's pretty good. It is the overrun sound that irks me. It almost sounds like the car is vomiting when you hear that overrun.

I don't think its ever fair to compare turbo cars to n/a cars, turbo cars lose so much energy in powering the turbines.
having said that, currently I own both the e92m3 and gt350, and I don't think there is a contest there. |

I agree on this as well based on video. However in person my F82 sounds so much better and to me would be second to the e92. I don't think the video or any for that matter captures anything well below a V8

I'm as guilty of ignoring this glaringly obvious fact as anyone, but it really is important. You simply can't expect a turbocharged engine to sound like a N/A engine. If you do, you're setting yourself up to be disappointed. Nice stable

There is no way the E30 sounds better than the F80....although we all can conclude that the E92 always wins by a landslide. That engine still makes me jizz in my pants... E92 >>> E46 >>> F80 >>> E36 >>> E30....although this vid isn't the greatest example because I am sure these are not stock and reeving while park isn't the best example

I don't own any of these cars (anymore), so it doesn't really mean much to me, but I have to wonder what the point of this is. It's well established that cars sound different under load than parked, many won't even let you rev that high while parked. It's also well established that it's hard to record accurate exhaust notes, and harder to get more than some tinny treble out of the speakers you're likely using to watch the video. So if the goal is to see what people who will only ever see these cars parked in a video will think of their exhaust notes, well, mission accomplished.

I really doubt that is the stock S54 exhaust. Anyone that has been around a stock E46 M3 knows it sounds like a resonated tin can. Anyone recall the RaspX? They sold those to remove the raspiness from the exhaust note.
E9X people can hold onto to the S65's for the sound. That is fine. The F8X is more than its exhaust note and as a whole package, is in every way a better car. It just has a "different" exhaust note. What did you expect, it to sound EXACTLY like the S65? At least it makes more torque all the way through the powerband, is 25% more fuel efficient, and isn't as heavy (ie handles better). I bet these same E9X people will be jumping on the F8X bandwagon in a few years when the current M3/4s start hitting the used car market. This happens with EVERY generation of M car on these forums with people bashing the current gen b/c they have the last gen...so stupid. The S65 does sound the best of the M3s btw. But if I had to pick my favorite BMW M car exhaust note it would be the S85 V10. Straight up F1 race car sound on a sedan. Last edited by MFNATIK; 12-30-2015 at 05:07 PM.. |

neat vid. 100% no-brainer that E92 sounds best -- free rev, under load, downshifts, whatevs. Sound is one quality of many for a "passionate" car -- it just comes down to what's most important to you.
turbo cars can sound excellent BTW. F40. |
