Aim higher. My Mom is 85 and still going strong. She's taking the whole family on a cruise this April. When you get to 80, you'll be wishing for another 20 years.

Cancer runs strong in the women in my family. I lost my Grandma at 70, my Aunt passed at 52, another Aunt was diagnosed at 48. All had/have breast cancer. I'll be blessed if I live to 80.

As in dead lifts? I suppose that would depend on the weight. I can barely lift my dead ass out of bed some mornings, but that beats the alternative.

I may look into one of those for next year. We rarely get more than 4 or 5 inches in a single storm and it's always light and fluffy stuff. The fact that they fold up and take less space is very sweet.

How is a snowblower a waste of money? Even a decent $500 gas powered is a worthwhile investment vs back breaking shoveling. A person can clear 4" easily in a fraction of the time required. My dad of 56 finally broke down a few years ago and bought a blower because of age. We've (before I moved out) dug through anywhere from a coating to 2+ ft from blizzards.

Also, the intersection where your driveway meets the road where the plows dump the street snow onto your driveway, that's HEAVY and I hated shoveling that part. It's densely packed and mixed with disgusting ice, snow, salt and slush.

I've shoveled snow about 3 or 4 times in the past couple of years. Break that up into snowblower cost vs times used and it runs well over $100 per driveway clearing. At that point I'm better off hiring a plow service.

Our driveways here have to have a gravel section at the end where they meet the street so the utility companies can run new power and TV cables if need be without busting up concrete or asphalt. So the last 8 or 10 feet of my driveway is gravel. When the plow goes by, that gravel gets mixed up in the wall of snow, so using a snowblower on it is out of the question.

So yes, in this case a pricey two-stage snowblower is a waste. But these one-stage blowers aren't bad. They may indeed be a possibility next season.

I blow gravel out the chute of my snowblower. It's unavoidable in my case. I don't worry about it. I just give the metal surfaces a quick touch-up in the spring before stowing the beast away.

EDIT: To the original topic, I'm 63 -- but age has nothing to do with what I think of moving snow. It's a chore, I want it done ASAP, ACAP, AD-FAP. (Hmm that last one looks a bit odd.)

I remember when my goal was to simply make it to 25. At one point I totaled 3 cars in less than a year (always hit, never the hitter and never at fault) and, sadly, doing a bit of street racing.

I got through that and just have to get through the culling's of the herd at 50-55 and 70. If I get through that I'm fairly certain that I will make it to 85 or 90. My dad is 86 and going strong. I'm not sure my mom's family members ever die. Her great aunt was 98 when she passed away and looked about 65. Seriously.

I no longer live in a snowy climate but I still cannot understand why people are averse to snow blowers. It's a tool for a job that nearly everyone hates.

Do people want to go back to scythes as well?
