So BMW takes 4 of the top 7 spots because of loaners? Don't almost all luxury manufacturers offer loaners?

Such are the games BMW plays. If you pay attention you can take advantage of those games.

Moving on up?
I am sure that most of the reasons mentioned in the posts do touch on the reason the 3 series BMW is the most sold car in the first year of ownership.
Another reason might be that folks buy the base car, are so happy with the brand, that they move up to an M3 or go after options they missed for only a few buck more a month-(M3 a lot more bucks). Also, some folks find that the cool 2.8i sedan worked when they were single, but now have a wife and family, and the X3/X4/x5 works better as a family car, and its a chance to go to the 3.5i, 4.0i, or 50e. I trade cars frequently because I just can't decide which i'd like to have. '15 M3 --> '16 M3 --> '16 Audi S3 + '16 Camaro SS --> '16 Camaro SS --> '17 Porsches 718 S --> currently: '17 Camaro SS 1LE, '16 Audi S3.
i'll say that unless you go from a really expensive car to a realllly cheap car, the "savings" you get isn't really worth it. so someone buying an M3, realizing they can't afford it and getting something 1/2 the price typically doesn't help out that much. I've seen my payments go all over the place. ultimately, i'm pretty happy with the cars I have now, but I do miss the M3 ... trying to hold out until the next gen is available though! the comp pkg is definitely tempting.
