Why are folks giving him a hard time about a six year old, reasonably priced, not wildly powerful car? I went to a high school where 911s and Maseratis weren't uncommon. This is a GTI in a fat suit, nothing to worry about here.

My niece got an F30 for college graduation and has complained about the cost of run flats and other expenses that wouldn't be as high if she'd just had a Civic, Golf or whatever, but it's also been a little bit of a lesson for her, so not all bad. |

Nice job JLT. Cracks me up that you're more into modding his new wheels than he is and to me all the more reason to do it up right. If you wanted to give him the grocery getter and he bitched that it was just that then to me it would be a whole different story. To have a kid that keeps his nose in the books and gives you a hard time for going overboard is just awesome.

A good way to tell if he truly appreciates the car is if he actually takes care of the car. I've seen way too many spoiled brats with their new rides that run them to shit. Not keeping them clean and no upkeep with the maintenance.

My first car was a black Audi wagon that my dad bought new and my mother drove for 3 years. Back then that was basically the equivalent of what you gave your kid. I turned out okay!
Something to be said for a modern safe and reliable not crazy fast car for a new driver. Good sight lines AWD, you could do a lot worse for a first time driver.

i don't see a problem with his son having a older Q5. Seems like he's a good kid, good grades, and has parents who love him enough to reward him with a safe car. With winters in Chicago (assuming OP is from Chicago), as a parent, I too would prefer my son to drive a AWD SUV. Having a dad modding his ride...that's a lucky kid! I'm sure the ladies will also be liking the new whip!
And we all parent in our own ways. There is no 'best' way. Seems like OP is raising a good kid, and for that, we should all be happy for him! Criticize on.... |

The mods made it look worth much more. Pull up a few shots of it stock and dirty...you would hear a lot more 'meh's.' Back to care. What it looks like in a year will pinpoint the boys appreciation level, if he's responsible for the basic care. If dad's out there with a full blown Mequires kit while Jr is playing video games, well, there you go. My dad gave me a $1000 70 Chevelle Malibu and I did what I could to it as I earned money. I cleaned between my Holley valve cover fins with Q-tips. It was clean but plain when I got it. Good paint, interior and motor. I think I was actually in love with that car. Creepy?

Cute little SUV, your son should be grateful. You know him better than anyone else, so if he's deserving, then good on ya.
Personally, I would have given him the modifications as rewards for being responsible. So if he drives it for six montns or a year without tickets or incidents, he gets new wheels, etc. etc. |

Why not let the kid mod it for himself.

Never understood why people buy SUVs or trucks only to lower them. To me that's like lifting a sports car. Just not my cup of tea.
I hope your son appreciates it, as it's a nice gesture from a loving parent; however, it sounds like you did it for your own gratification. Nothing wrong with that, per say, but you've made his car more high maintenance than he seems to care for it to be. If it were me in the situation, I would have let him drive it unmodded while learning and getting his license. Then once convinced that he's a responsible driver, upgrade one thing at a time with his input and suggestions, sort of like a project car, so father and son can both appreciate each mod as it's added. |

Nice car for what sounds like a deserving kid. Absolutely nothing wrong with rewarding your kids for doing all the right things.

In the US, we don't get many wagons which is why I drive a lowered SUV. If I could get a wagon, I would.
And VW/Audi/Porsche SUVs have the biggest wheel gap short of a monster truck. Lowering them really just brings them in line with everything else. Quote:

Funny story, but a guy down the street from me has an F01 and an E65, both black on black, but the E65 is covered in massive hail damage and looks generally neglected. Their kid came home from college recently with his black on black E60 M5 and I saw him "wash" it with paper towels after a recent rain. Poor thing has a scratch on every panel, bumpers are both smashed and every wheel is heavily curbed.

Honest question, why keep the dealer license plate frame in the rear? The first thing I do to every car is remove/replace the dealer license plate frame (even if I like the dealer). I see you removed the front plate, which looks great (although depending on state, can result in attention from police).

Hey I'm sorry I gave you a hard time. That car isn't really the worst example of spoiling a kid out there. Pre-owned, safe, not a performance vehicle, etc. As an adult I just genuinely appreciate the character my parents built in me, making me work my ass off and scrounge for a dollar and drive a junker, my honors/AP classes notwithstanding (and god forbid I ever got a C I might have lost even the junker). But things change with each generation. My "old days" weren't like my own dad's for instance. I think he just walked everywhere.
Each parent has their focus and values and I can't thrust mine onto you. You're likely a good dad and I hope he knows the only way to the badass cars in your garage is hard work (the real kind... where you bleed and cry and life seems miserable hahahah).
