I didn't know the AM Vantage was available in manual ! Get an AM then...and buy some nice suits with the money saved from the higher priced alternatives ...

Can they really bump up the msrp when he already put a deposit down on one? I thought you put down the deposit to be locked into a price?
Unfortunately when he put a deposit down the dealer REFUSED to negotiate a set price so he may be a little out of luck. But at the time they said MSRP was $109,000.

i'd get that babe in the background without a heart beat... but in that range, there are so many choices: AM V8, 911, Maser GT, Jaguar XKR...

The R8's not a bad choice for the price. I suppose 911's are too common. I'd definitely pick it over a V8 vantage. Everything else i'd consider is a lot more expensive (cough*ferrari), so yeah, I'd go for the R8 if the 911 was too common for me.

With that said, the 911 is not too common for me, and i'd get a 911, but you get the point.

I'd definitely stray to a used Gallardo. I've seen more R8s in my lifetime than Gallardos, and the R8 has only been out for months.

The only reason why I would buy an R8 is for driving feel, beauty, and exclusiveness. All which the Gallardo excels at.

He originally put a deposit on one about 6 months ago when the suggested retail was $109,000. Now, he expects to pay a premium but I see them going for $160,000 and up. He is under the impression that he will be able to get his for $140,000 at most. What do you guys think about this?

The appeal of the car other than it's gorgeous looks are its rarity. He likes that fact that you don't see them all that often. However, I'm not sure he's prepared to pay a HUGE premium over list considering they only produce 350 (I think) a year. He also thinks if he drives it for 3 years, since it is limited that he will be able to get most of his money back when he sells it. I realize this is a risk but I'm looking for your opinions as well.

He has considered other cars but neither he nor I can find something to pull his attention away from the gorgeous Audi.

It would have to be very sporty obviously, not so common, come in manual tranny, non-American, and less than what he's willing to spend on this R8 ($120000-130000 or less). If it were me, I'd get a Carrera 4s or an M3 Coupe and save some $$$ but neither of those are too uncommon around here.

Also, he's 6 foot or so but has pretty long legs so he needs something that's substantial in size (He currently has an '02 M5.) I figured I'd ask here for his sake and get some other auto enthusiast's opinions. I appreciate anyone that takes time to think about this one.
When I put my deposit on my M3 2 years before I got it, I had a guarentee that it would be no more than MSRP. Did your friend not talk about price when he plunked down his deposit. Obviously he's successful if he has enough money to buy a $120K car, so it seems he forgot some important details in his initial discussions with his dealer. Like, "this is for MSRP...right?!"

You were lucky to have a good dealer....Now a days, you can't trust no one even after paperwork has been done.
