It’s sad how this is even a thread. You should have pulled out.

nope.
I only let kids walk around the car. no sitting inside. Last time I let a kid sit in my GTR he opened the door into my garage's drywall. luckily it was an easy fix. But I'm not taking that chance again.

interesting responses, not sure how my title changed but it's more of how do you deal with kids being in your car and try to maintain it. this took an awkward left turn but again we have a family vehicle for transporting (XC90) but I consider my car the weekend car so maybe I should have been a little clearer. error on my part.

I have two kids, 2yo and 4yo. They aren't in my car much but I love it when they are. In fact, I don't care what car it is... I just love being with them whatever it may do to the m3.
It's a little thing a get to look forward to at the end of some days... picking my kids up, singing with them in the car, and enjoying time spent together.

Idk why I'm in this thread as I'm single and in my mid-20s. But it irks me even to have friends in the car especially in the winter months as they put their nasty hands and feet all over.
I'm sure my perspective will change once I have kids. |

I don't have kids (and I'm not having kids), but I cannot wait until my neice is tall/old enough to ride in the car with me.
Her being a 'sticky' kid is totally worth the trade off of sharing my passion for cars with her. I can clean the car after if I need to. ![]() She loves the power wheels I bought her, so I'm getting her ready to 'go fast' in the real car. ![]()

![]() Its unavoidable dealing with non-car people. Grandma will put her hands (and rings) on the fender to help herself out the car. My mom slapped her shoes on the side skirt of civic to shake the snow off thinking it was like the side step on her SUV. Just so many little things, its easier just to get another cheap car and not worry.

I have only one very well behaved girl so it's easier for me. But that said, I got rid of my GT4 because I couldn't take her with me.
I have more fun with my hobbies when my kid is involved. |

Hooookay guys, let’s go easy on the self righteousness a bit, yeah? We all love our kids, including the OP. He’s just looking for some advice on how to be a dad while keeping his cars in pristine condition.
I was semi-joking/drunk posting on the “delegating to the 14yo” bit, but it was also kind of serious. Educate your kids on how to help you take care of your prized possessions, make them understand that this is something that dad really cares about, and trust them to do the best they can. My dad was not a big car guy, but he really did love his hi-fi equipment and his vinyl collection. So we all tried our best to respect that because we loved him. My siblings were more successful than me - i was the fuckup who accidentally dropped and shattered his turntable cover...good times. |

No, you're not the only one. ... No, I don't dread having kids in my car - but I differ from many people on this forum because I see my car the same way I see my phone or my computer... You do your best to look after it, but at the end of the day it's going to wear out and degrade with use. There's no point getting stressed over every scratch or dint.
It's totally worth it when your kids start saying "Your car is cool daddy" or "I want to go in daddy's car, because it's faster". But I hate that I'm stuck with a car with 4 seats. I want a Lotus Elise. I hate that I don't get time to keep the car clean and I get embarrassed when I pull up to school in a nice black BMW that's covered in dirt because it rained yesterday, I had a family commitment on a dirt road and I had no choice but to use it today. Honestly, nobody likes spending 3 hours detailing the car only to have it filled with sand and dirt 24 hours later. You know, kids are awesome, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love them more than I love my car; but I don't think many people are openly honest about the sacrifices we make having kids. ... And if we're going to the beach, I'll always try to take the wife's car ... because I don't want my car covered in sand. I guess we all have a choice - we could buy a $1,000 beater daily-driver car for the kids, and keep our fancy sports cars for ourselves... but where's the fun in that? ... but in all seriousness - if you're one of those people who really values their shit and wants to keep everything in pristine condition - teach your kids to follow your example. Set some ground rules: If you want to drive in daddy's car, wipe your feet and no food in the car. .... and don't be afraid to buy some seat covers. ... Personally, I love driving around with my Labrador in the passenger seat of my 135i, the fact that his tail keeps hitting the iDrive controller worries me more than his claws on my windowsills. |

Nah man, it's just a midrange BMW M car, not a limited run Ferrari. As long as the kids aren't animals what do I care? I mean really, I love my ride just as much as the next guy but let's not get crazy here. The whole reason I bought an M was that I wanted a sports car and the BMW was the compromise I needed to accommodate my son. If kids weren't a consideration I would be driving something else altogether.

My friends would never put their feet on my dash. In my travels I have seen many passengers do this as I look at other vehicles on the highway. |

Also, It’s always the dirty, hairy man feet or the bunioned and cracked-skin feet that we’re subjected to. If you’re gonna subject us to this, could you at least make sure you have pretty manicured feet?
There was a lady out here who was a passenger in a minor crash. No one else was injured but the airbags deployed. She had her feet up on the dash, and the airbag broke her leg bones, her thigh bones, and drove her legs up into her face so she got facial fractures too. Something to mention to your passenger in case they object to your objections about putting their feet up. |
