A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

I’ve only ever driven an atom once for 6 laps of a local track. It was mind blowing!! The instructor next to me said “do exactly what I say, when I say, or we will crash” haha. Think he was more nervous than me. Hahaha. Trouble is it was so loud I couldn’t here him anyway even with an intercom in the helmet. So I just blasted it round and managed not to die so all good!! Haha. I’ve also had quite a bit of time on road and track in a caterham and if I had the cash and a garage, I would have one in a heartbeat.

I have an Atom 3 supercharged that I regularly track in Western Canada. Going on to my 3rd season soon. I've had the honor to track quite a bit of crazy cars and the Atom is by far the best and funnest thing on 4 wheels. I run much wider slicks and the Gs are mind blowing. Atom runs on par with 991GT3rs at my track. Best part is I get to run both closed and open wheel groups so I play with radicals and formula cars 90% of the time. I don't quite enjoy running with full bodied cars in the Atom though.
Feel free to pm me if you have any questions regarding the Atom. Cheers.

I've driven the Atom a few times. Eh not impressed when driving it back to back with our FSAE car.
I even built a whole slide deck and presented at FSAE comp how our car was better than the Atom |

Driven the Supercharge Eco Tech Atom, fun little car that gets a shit load of attention especially driving it in city traffic. I've driven this model around ten times and honestly it never gets old. The acceleration is brutal and it tracks amazingly, although its depending on the tires.... Once it had some bridgestones on it and it was to easy to break the tires lose even at 60mph. You really should have R888 on it or better to enjoy it to the fullest. Keep in mind this is a toy so seats are a plastic bucket and no real cushion. Plus on a hot summer day get ready to burn your ass if the cars been sitting out in the sun. While moving the air cools you down and everything is great... sitting in it at a stand still, you're baking. Of course suspension will be a bit jarring but it is awesome to look down and see it all work. With out a helmet the engine and exhaust noises are what you'd expect but as soon as you hit the gas enough for the supercharger to take over, all you hear is the whine(it's pretty intoxicating). I would recommended a helmet though, even with large glasses, it's pretty easy to dry out your eyes and look like you've been spending the day with Cheech and Chong.

Everyone has to remember one thing when you're talking Atom or Mono: These things are motorcycle alternatives, not really cars.
If you go into it with that mindset, I think it'll open things up a bit in terms of comfort and driveability. That being said: I'd daily drive the crap out of an Atom! I have very nice snow gear to wear too :-)

Before there was Atom, there was (and still is) this:
Top Gear's 2008 Car of the Year. Jeremy Clarkson quip: 'It's like driving on superglue'. Not street legal in the U.S. ... but is pretty much everywhere else. (This is the R version, which runs the 300hp Audi 2.0T engine.) Just sayin' ... this is the car that started the modern track-only-car hobbyist phenomenon.

[QUOTE=TSM330i;24487706]I've known about the Ariel Atom prior to the Top Gear test (saw it on the cover of a European car magazine and it was love at first sight!).
I've never driven one, but sat in one at NJMP. A group of guys from NYC have a "car share" program where you sign up to drive other people's cars from the club. One of the members was driving a spec Miata on the track and told us about the Atom in the garage, so we went to see it. The guy that showed us wasn't "allowed" to drive the Atom on the track without his comp license. It's mind blowing fast on the track (he had a ride along in it). I have run into a few people who've raced in the Atom series and they said the rear end is VERY tail happy. Of course, the cars are super fast as well. You can try them here: https://atlantamotorsportspark.com/drive-ariel-atom/ Anyone have an updated link or know where I can drive one in the southeast? |
