Rolex watches are too small. People like big face watches these days. They need to keep up with the times.

I think that rolex has become a status symbol more than anything else since everyone knows the name. I personally don't really like the style of rolex watches, especially how the look of the crystal is broken up with that huge magnified date thing. Eh, not my style, but if you like them they sure do keep a good resale value over time.

+1 about the trend with large-faced watches.

This is true. I guess overall I'm kind of old school.

+2 that's why i bought the breitling. i like the big face and overall design. i think breitling represents a younger man's status/success symbol more than a rolex...not to mention breitling's tie to aviation. when i'm 35+, i'll probably have a rolex, but until then, i'll own a different brand of watch with a bigger face.

i'm not really a big fan of the magnified date or smaller face either. that's why rolex really isn't on my radar.

You're bored with your Breitling?!? Do the chronograph functions even work or should I say, is your watch real?

I think the leaders in watches right now are the German watches for innovation, classic styling, and design.

I wouldn't spend money on a status brand because there are superb fakes out there with big name ETA and Valjoux Swiss automatic movements and wearing an expensive status brand watch is a really stupid investment.
http://www.youtube.com/user/sinowatches

Rolex quality has gone down the drain. They used to be decent leaders, but their quality of their movements in terms of fit and finish is very poor in terms of what you're paying for the watch.

The most impressive watch is probably the Timex Ironman triathlon. I wore it at the Grand Canyon at about 122 Fahrenheit temperature. While other people wore their quartz watches failed, camera batteries failed, and people even suffering from heat exhaustion, my watch handled the extreme temperature. Right now, it's my daily watch.

Timex Ironman is NASA certified to be worn on the shuttle. It's like a little brother of the Omega Speedmaster Professional.

Nice thread, might be able to help me out. I know little to nothing about watches, as I cant stand the feeling of them (havent warn one since i was about 12). My roommate wants to get her bf a watch for his bday coming up.

She wants to spend in the $500-600 range. I know thats way under some of the watches you guys are throwing out (she's a college student working two jobs) Anyone got some suggestions for some men's square faced watches in her range?

Thanks

If your roommate wants to get her bf a watch around $500-600dollars, you can get something decent probably at Costco like an entry level Tag Heuer quartz. They're pretty nice and you get quartz accuracy with a classy looking Tag design.

How much are you looking to spend?

Tag Carrera series watches are really nice and fairly affordable too (considering high end watch prices). I'd get one of those for now otherwise if you're looking to spend a little more you can get a Breitling Navitimer. That watch series is one my my favorites.

I just bought a Hamilton Jazzmaster, it's a really nice watch for everyday use. Matches with a lot of things.
