Save for a couple models like the 3, 5, and X3; all the G-chassis models have some weird ass styling quirks. Overall they still look good, but I miss clean designs. It's just a sign of the times, you either set trends or you fall behind.

Models completely missed the mark on: 4-series, iX, 2 gran coupe.

Agree with 99% of everything you said. The 1% is that BMW screwed up on these:

Wow those additional angles provided, with the way things just kind of jut out do not make this a good looking car at all. Maybe I'll warm up to it, but right now, it's not stirring any positive emotions outta me.

It is overall a good looking car there is some styling cues in there from the 1m so the new M2 will be interesting to see in the flesh later on.

What i like a lot is how they removed the line from the F series 2er that made the hood look weird where it simply ended in the middle of the front lights never got that part and now it is further back so the hood line ends at the back of the light. So now the only annoying line left is the center hood line that is there because BMW likes to save a few bucks so it is easy to mount during production so we are stuck with it for quite a while longer until they change the production line so it doesn't have to be made with it.

But what i do wonder if the idea with these shadow line trims will be removed ever, there is so much of this black plastics on so many new cars today not just BMW but so many wonder if someone will come up with some new design that will blow us away. That will make the car look seamless all over. I guess today its also there for the looks but also from a functional purpose.

BMW needs new designers. Bring back Chris Bangle! Look how graceful his designs have aged.

That's not an assumption. There's plenty of factual sales numbers to back that up.

What's the view on these wheel arch extensions? I don't know why they have done this on the M240i…

Most likely a regulation thing for EU markets. The M2 has stupid black plastic arches added to them at the factory to meet regulations over the last 1-2 years (including M2 CS). Maybe the current 2 series design needed some 'last-minute' tweaking to meet the same regulations.

You would have hoped they would have just made the arches 5mm wider?

Maybe the 'quirky' designers at BMW thought it was an opportunity to add yet more unnecessary 'design' . In all seriousness it is probably a regulation thing either way. I imagine if they changed the overall shape of the bodywork/arches then that could have had another implication on safety testing etc so they took the easy route and just tacked a little bit onto the arch. Could be wrong of course, purely speculating. I just know new EU regs require the arch to be so many centimetres overlapping the wheel.

I bet you are right. That would be why the 220d doesn't have them and the M240i does.

I wonder if they can just be "peeled off"?

Possibly, hard to tell. The ones on the M2s currently are screwed in under the arch so it's a hefty bit of plastic (not just what you see). They also have their edges covered with PPF. Right git to remove, but doable
