it's a BMW customer service rep that you can call or email, basically. they can give you insider information on your vehicle's build date or specific information on why it's halted. they usually know more than your dealer.

That's genius.

I see they have an average salary of $42K/yr. I wonder if I could log-in and do this after-hours instead of watching my girlfriend's mind-numbing TV shows?

That’s great news, I have a “week 9” build that hasn’t started, hopefully mine will be tomorrow.

this is my first BMW (also first "high end" manufacturer) and I love the tracking feature of it. I just wish all other companies followed suit.

This all assumes a standard order and not something unique.
It’s nuts to expect that dealerships want to take the risk of tons of people coming in and putting in orders for cars they have no intention of buying because they don’t take a deposit lol pretty much anything you order custom these days requires a deposit, most of the time non-refundable. Just because another buyer can be found doesn’t mean it isn’t going to take time that then costs the dealership money.
We can agree to disagree. If a dealer doesn't want to deal with customers ordering custom, they can simply sell Hondas and save the headache. When you buy a luxury car, you expect to get exactly what you ordered and within a timely reasonable manner. Since BMW does not commit to either, customers are forced to cancel their orders and not loose money in the process.

Your car might have been damaged during shipment. Check carefully before accepting this vehicle. Also, you must be notified of any significant damage. I was told something like any damage over $500 but I might be wrong.

Dealer notification to customer of damage is a whole different ball game and is governed differently by State (US) laws that address automobile dealer responsibilities. For example in my State of Oregon the following applies....note the caveat of "non welded component" exemption.

Quote:
A dealer shall disclose, in writing, to a purchaser of the new motor vehicle prior to entering into a sales contract that the new motor vehicle has been damaged and repaired if the damage to the new motor vehicle exceeds $1,000, as calculated at the rate of the dealer’s authorized warranty rate for labor and parts. Replacement of glass, tires, bumpers or any comparable nonwelded component is not considered damage and repair for purposes of this section. For purposes of this subsection, “comparable nonwelded component” does not include a fender, hood, trunk lid or door. [1989 c.716 §3; 1999 c.660 §4; 2003 c.411 §3; 2009 c.627 §2]
