So now I'm thinking damn. Is it just a lid or the entire assembly?

Anyone making braces yet?

It did not even dawn on me.

Just the lid and can be purchased separately after the fact

Dinan makes braces confirmed fit

Some people retro fit g22 braces

It's safe to say most m340i braces should fit if they use the same bolt holes

Can you run the intake without the top cover? I'd assume it'll make a difference with the spool noise

Probably but you would be pulling in hot air from the engine bay. The intake is designed to get most of the air from the Ram/Cold air intake tube going to the front end.

Lots of different methods -- tin snips at the connection point of the clamp is probably the easiest for future reference.

You could run it with the lid off if desired and you would get a bit more induction noise but as mentioned that is not how it was designed to run so couldn't say what that would do to the performance.

This might seem like a silly question, but why are there rectangular cut outs on the side of the box?

I would assume its for airflow, but if we're trying to limit the air from the engine bay from getting in, I'm not sure what its purpose would be.

Again, my apologies if it's a silly question but I was curious to ask.

The secondary air inlets also allow the intake system to be more audible so the turbo spool and BOV can be appreciated. A stark difference from Dinan's traditional fully sealed systems where induction noise is not nearly as recognizable. Not to be outdone by the increased power and sound, the outwardly visible system is made of immaculate carbon fiber so the under the hood appeal is vastly improved over its drab and utilitarian beginnings. A worthy piece to add to an already impressive vehicle.

When I had the windows down today I really got to appreciate the spooling and blow off.

@Vudumonkey25 well said! That's why I had the idea of running it without the top lid.

I suppose this way it's the best of both worlds.

I'm using a AFE intake on my M2. The box is completely sealed but the top lid is removed for extra sound.

It's why so many people loved the MST or BMS intakes. Lot's of turbo sounds. I really like the Dinan it's like OEM but give nice cosmetics under the hood, and added sound without worrying about pulling in all the hot air

Ultimately its what Vudu said but just for a little more color ---

When Dinan designs an intake we really like to give a secondary inlet for additional air flow if possible and why you see that implemented in a lot of our offerings. On the "smaller" cars however room/cost/design sometimes prohibits us from going the steps we would like to so over the past 3 years or so we have been experimenting with other methods.

Historically we strive for a sealed intake to keep the charge air as cool as possible for maximum performance benefit but of course this sacrificed sound which seems to be the main desire in todays market. So starting with the MINI intake we experimented w/ semi-open designs in an effort to minimize performance loss but still get some of that audible flair folks desire. What we have discovered is there is a 'sweet spot' on the vast majority of applications where we can have some exposure/opening to outside air to function as a bit of a secondary inlet while still maintaining the same intake temps and thus not hurting performance in the process. The added benefit is also a bit more induction noise.

Why does BMW use a non-reusable clamp on the lower part of the air intake?

Intake install

Pretty simple to install, looks very nice in the engine bay. Makes the car sound more aggressive with a muffler delete at least and make the bov sound loud too!

Installed last night.

Definitely not as loud as the AP intake I had on my F22, but I can hear the spool with the windows up, as well as the recirc valve.

I'm wondering how drastically it would hurt performance if I took the lid off...

Did a real quick video, wife didn't want to help film, LOL.

Intake legit installs under 30min if you can work a socket.
You can put together the airbox in your home. Then head out and remove the oem and install easily. Hardest part is removing the bottom clamp but just takes a little prying with a flat head

Check out the first 5 min of the kies mst intake g20 install video.

Then putting the dinan in is just reverse of that as it's pretty much oem style going back in compared to the mst
