I was in a i4 M50 and it had the HK system and I thought the bass was amazing it was so deep and shook the car and was very clear. I also enjoyed the surround sound. I had the bass, treble, and surround sound all the way up and I couldn't go past 50 percent volume it was so loud if I went more I would've lost hearing. I hope my 2023 M240i has the same experience.

The HK system has various configuration, number of speaker, output power maybe different. I haven't experiencing the HK on i4 M50, so I can't comment on it.
Yes, the HK is good enough, but if comparing with the B&O / Burmester on the Audi/Benz, just not that amazing.

The G42's system is an upgrade from the F series. It has a 464watts vs. 360watts and an extra 2 speakers in the rear.

It's gotten great reviews from some credible sources, but like many OEM systems, you have to tune it a bit to get the sound right.

I personally would still explore a direct replacement sub upgrade from Bav or Bimmertech based on my music preferences though.

I like the HK, but coming from a 2017 S3 with B&O system / ~1k watts it does feel like a step down. Fwiw when i test drove the 22 S3 last year it also sounded like a step down.

I apologize for resurrecting this older topic, but I'm actually a little disappointed with how the HK soundsystem plays. I'm not at all sure if there are any subwoofers installed under the seats, because even if I turn up the volume significantly, I definitely don't feel like anything is moving with my ass. If I add lower frequencies to the equalizer, the bass is of course more pronounced, but I still feel that I am only playing some mid-bass speakers in the car, but definitely not in the way I would expect from a subwoofer. What is your experience?

Same. The little sub inside the spare tire of my GTI would easily vibrate the rear view mirror. Quite a different system I realize. The G42 could use some more low end.

The factory sub is hardly noticeable, if you enjoy bass you need a true sub. It’s a super easy install in this car with everything being accessible in the trunk.

Under seat speakers

The speakers under the front seats aren’t subwoofers. They are mid-range woofers. Subwoofers would make the entire car shake.

So you’re saying there are no subwoofers?

There are woofers under the seats. Some just feel they aren’t low enough frequency or thump for their liking, so the question was are they SUBwoofers or MIDwoofers?

Personally I think the HK system is great. But I suspect if I replaced the speakers and the woofers it would get even better. In my last car I replaced the amp/dsp with a massive unit from JBL that is comparable to the HK. And I replaced all the speakers with Bavsound. I betting the Bavsounds are better than the stock HK ones. It’s just I like the HK so much as it is, I’d rather spend the money elsewhere in the car.

Exactly. I was just questioning the previous comment that the speakers under the seats are not subs.

We’d have to get the specs on the crossover used. But good luck getting these details. BMW barely describes what their options even include most of the time..

Regardless of what they technically are, they do not output any recognizable bass. The HK system paired with an aftermarket sub in the trunk sounds great.
