Classic BMW they have been doing this with iDrive for over a decade now.
I mean look at the G01 X3, it’s running a weird mismatch of iDrive 6 architecture with iDrive 7 shoehorned in. I have a 2020 X3 with the iDrive 7, but because it’s really an iDrive 6 car it misses out on some features. It’s pretty funny though that they will have iDrive 7, 8 and 9 all on sale at once. |

iDrive 8 users will now notice their batteries dying much quicker and will have no choice but to upgrade to the newest vehicles running iDrive 9

This makes sense why BMW is not listed as a manufacturer to support the upcoming all-new Car Play to launch latter this year.
How secure of a platform is Android Auto, as I’m sure there will be a way to side-load apps on iDrive 9? Will be interesting if future BMW’s with iDrive 9 will support Apple iOS digital key and wireless AppleCar play. I’m sure that a majority of BMW owners prefer Apple iOS over Google android.

That’s why long live ICE. How secure is Android auto, as I can picture remote hacking in the future.

I am glad I have a normal BMW M2 Comp with a normal set of controls...does the cell, climate, the music and tells me the revs/speed etc. The rest of the time I am driving...this is beyond overboard...but then I guess I am old!! |

Game that’s BMW for you. Why else you think G42 went to iD8 in litreal second? 😂

Also, Apple (CarPlay, Digital Key) can run on top of Android Automotive - I think many are confusing Android Auto with Android Automotive. |

It looks cool but I’ll stick with idrive 7 for as long as I can. I wish the live cockpit screen and hud were more configurable but other than that I really like id7 and its relative simplicity.
I also have no interest in carplay taking over the gauge cluster in future apple plans (not saying BMW would allow apple to do that, but its something apple is moving towards with carplay).

Wait, isn’t Android core based on Linux anyway?
Anyway, this should get our minds off the slippery path of entertainment system updates, and focused on the mainstay of the brand: the thrill of driving. Long live whatever system I have in my 2018 M3. Classic gauges, great handling, enough power to scare both passengers and Porsches on track.

I was expecting an admission of mea culpa for the horrible iDrive 8 dash integration.
I do hope Porsche goes for Apple's equivalent instead of what BMW's done in picking Android. I can see the end of the road of my relationship with BMW.

LOL why? If I had a Porsche, I wouldn't want CarPlay UI anywhere near the instrument cluster. The infotainment would be the only place I would want these systems to be.

Mercedes is in the same boat. They announced MBUX in 2018 claiming it will be the best thing replacing the very outdated COMAND system and now they're moving away from MBUX to MB.OS - using Android Automotive. I believe Audi is also moving towards Android Automotive for their next-generation OS as well. |

They have so little confidence in their ability to deliver technological features that they are debuting technology on lower priced vehicles to make them guinea pigs? They didn’t pay enough for stability or quality to they can be beat up on… They need to stop what they are doing and seriously figure out how to build a “platform” that they can deploy across their lineup and support for a number of years. That way they can focus on delivering value for those vehicles over time with stuff like Remote Software Updates and new features to compete with Tesla and the like in this arena. People really hoped they’d do that with iDrive 7 since it had RSU support. Then iDrive 8 comes quickly after and “better RSU support” only to be killed off before it makes it to any serious number of cars. Meanwhile MB is doing a great job making MBUX a platform they can support across their lineup for years. People don’t want to hop into a BMW and feel like every time they get into it they need to re-learn iDrive. They also don’t want to feel like they need to buy a new car to get low hanging fruit new features while the competition is pushing stuff out regularly. And even more importantly they don’t want to feel like the brand considers them not worthy of a quality product because they purchased a “low end” vehicle. BMW is looking lost and confused. |
